WARRENSBURG, MO (Feb. 19, 2014) – Using resources available at the University of Central Missouri Student Recreation and Wellness Center, the non-profit group Paradox Sports will provide a free multimedia presentation showing students how to overcome obstacles and challenges they face in life through adaptability, perseverance, and community. Their presentation, titled “Summit Experience,” will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, on the lower courts area of the Rec Center.
Leading this inspirational program will be two brothers, Sean and Tim O’Neil, who co-founded Paradox Sports and are professional rock climbers. They will be joined by Pete Davis, director of Adaptive Climbing Curriculum for Paradox Sports and one of the world’s most-accomplished one-armed climbers.
Paradox Sports is an organization based in Boulder, Colo., that is dedicated to teaching adaptive outdoor sports with team members who inspire by example. In addition to inspirational opportunities, they provide specialized adaptive equipment so that the physically disabled can be active participants in human-powered outdoor sports. One of their goals in coming to UCM is to give students insight and teach them not to let challenges they face prevent them from pursuing activities they enjoy.
"Paradox doesn't just focus on adaptive rock climbing, but many other outdoor pursuits, and because of this training coming to UCM, we'll be able to offer more inclusive outdoor programs for students in the future," said Mike Busekrus, coordinator of outdoor and experiential leadership at UCM.
In additional to the presentation Friday, Paradox Sports is also working with the Office of Student Activities to conduct an adaptive climbing training program for members of local universities and climbing groups which will travel to UCM on Saturday, Feb. 22. Reservations are not required for the Friday program, but are necessary for anyone taking part Saturday.
