Unique Marketing Competition Comes to UCM

WARRENSBURG, MO (Nov. 2, 2011) – For the second consecutive year, students from well-known public and private universities across the United States will converge on the University of Central Missouri campus in Warrensburg, Mo., to compete in the State Farm Marketing and Sales Competition. Slated for Nov. 11, the day-long event gives students an opportunity to compete against each other while testing their skills in selling a mock auto insurance policy to young adult customers.

“We’re very excited about hosting the State Farm Marketing and Sales Competition after a successful inaugural year in 2010,” said Charlie Schwepker, UCM professor of marketing. “We have a wonderful partnership with State Farm, which makes all of this possible, and it’s a tremendous learning opportunity for everyone involved. I can’t think of a better way for our Missouri students to test their knowledge and skills in sales than by competing against their peers from major schools across the country.” He added that the competition also gives State Farm a look at the quality of students who are preparing to enter the job market.

Two students from each participating school were selected and will travel to UCM to compete on an individual and team basis. The students also compete in two separate videotaped presentations, one in which they sell a mock insurance policy to a young adult driver and another where they present their ideas about leveraging the current State Farm marketing campaign as a mock State Farm agent. These are judged by an independent panel. Each student will be given an overall score, which will determine their ranking in the competition.

“State Farm is serious about developing the insurance and financial services experts that our community demands,” said Agency Vice President Bill Roundtree, “and there’s no better partnership than with those universities who are providing their young talent in this competition.”

Competition organizers selected the young adult market as a target because of the large number of individuals in this group who are entering adulthood. This group of drivers is usually not worried about things that could happen, so it is vital to reach out to them with messages about the importance of protecting themselves and others. State Farm will use the competition results to learn more about how to market its insurance and services to about 11 million households with young adults.

The competition will conclude in the evening with award presentations to the outstanding teams and individuals. State Farm helps cover travel expenses for all of the students selected to participate in this event, and provides financial awards to top finishers to help fund their education.
