One Campus, One Book Author to Present Book Talks at UCM

Contact: Savannah Crosier
WARRENSBURG, MO (Oct. 26, 2015) – Elizabeth Svoboda, author of the University of Central Missouri’s One Campus, One Book selection, What Makes a Hero? The Surprising Science of Selflessness will present a book talk at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in Hendricks Hall. A book signing is planned following each talk.

Svoboda believes every person has the power to unlock potential heroism. Using dozens of fascinating real-life examples, she explains how genes compel people to do good for others, how going through suffering is linked to altruism, and how acting generously can greatly improve a person’s mental health. Her book also reveals how to enable our most heroic selves to step forward.

One Campus, One Book is the common reading program at UCM. The purpose of the program is to engage all students and the campus community in a shared, academically-driven experience, bringing meaningful conversations on relevant, complex subjects beyond the classroom and into students' daily lives.

The program is sponsored by UCM’s American Democracy Project, a multi-campus initiative driven to prepare the next generation of informed, engaged citizens for democracy.

Nominate a book for next year’s common reader program by selecting the “Nominate a book” button at the bottom of the above web page. Nominations are due Nov 20, 2015.
