Wheelchair Challenge Raises Accessibility Awareness

Contact: Jeff Murphy
WARRENSBURG, MO (Sept. 18, 2014) – A group of University of Central Missouri students will raise awareness of the challenges people who are in wheelchairs face while seeking contributions that can be used to enhance accessibility on campus. The Wheelchair Challenge, conducted by the Association of Social Work Students, is planned for 4-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, beginning on the east side of the W.C. Morris Science Building.

This is the first year for the event, according to Shantelle Rockman, a UCM student and member of the ASWS who is helping to coordinate the challenge. ASWS hopes to raise at least $2,500 through the program. The group is working with other offices and individuals on campus to make the Wheelchair Challenge possible.

“It is the hope of our organization that it will become a yearly event,” Rockman said.

She noted that three teams of three individuals who are not disabled will complete the challenge. It will take them across campus in wheelchairs, where they will learn how to maneuver across sidewalks, through buildings, and specially designated areas before concluding the event at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Figuring out how to handle situations such as an elevator outage or a restroom that does not have a wheelchair accessible stall, are some of the challenges teams will encounter along the route.

“There will be a handicapped accessible van from Jay Hatfield Mobility where the teams will roll up inside and see how it is to drive with hand controls. Part of this challenge is to gain the perspective of being in a wheelchair,” Rockman said.

She noted that money raised will be used to put back into campus to help fix accessibility issues teams encounter during the event. Wheelchairs are being provided by NuMotion.

Individuals who want to contribute are encouraged to mail checks payable to ASWS – Wheelchair Challenge to University of Central Missouri ASWS, Wood 5, Warrensburg, MO 64093.
