Assistive Technology

Technology Available to Provide Equal Access

Computer environments at the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) and located around campus are equipped with software and hardware to provide equal access for persons with disabilities. Additional equipment may be available upon request.

See below for equipment at various campus locations.

Accessibility Services Office

 JAWS (Job Access with Speech) Speech System: Screen reading program for blind and visually impaired users; for test takers only.

Juliet Embosser System and Braille Printer: Electronically created braille embossed copy for class notes and other small volume requests.

Print Materials Provided in an Alternate Format: Electronic Text, Word document for hand-held Braille device, speech output. Braille textbooks available with several months’ notice.

Digital Recorder and Smartpen: devices available to check out.

James C. Kirkpatrick Library

JAWS (Job Access with Speech) Speech System: Screen-reading program that improves the productivity level of blind and visually impaired users.  

Kurzweil Reader: A PC-based reading system for blind or visually impaired students

IBM PC Dedicated to Open Book and ZoomText: Open-Book software scans and reads text aloud; Zoom-Text for Windows is a screen magnifier (2X to 16X).

IBM PC Dedicated to Window Bridge : Screen-reader for the blind, supporting both synthetic speech and/or Braille output. Provides access to the Internet as well as thousands of Windows application.

Voyager XL by V-Tek: Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera on movable viewing table that magnifies printed text. 

Audio Books: Our library currently owns many audio-books and has access through interlibrary loan to many more.

Assistive Listening Devices: Assistive listening devices consist of a receiver and headphones worn by the individual. FM speaker systems broadcast to the receivers and are utilized in JCKL Flexible Classrooms, Union Ballroom, Wood Auditorium, Science Auditorium, Lovinger Auditorium, Hendricks Hall, and the Multipurpose Building.  There are additional portable units at JCKL and OAS.

Dragon Dictate Voice Recognition Software : Voice recognition dictation: Provides for full mouse movement as well as text and numerical dictation and formatting by voice, completely hands free.
