Support Staff Council Minutes
August 9, 2011
1:30 P.M. - UN 219
Brenda Dooley, Support Staff Council President, called the August meeting to order and welcomed those attending.
Brenda asked if there were any corrections or additions to the May minutes. There being none, Cindy Merryfield made a motion to approve the minutes. Ginny McTighe seconded the motion. Brenda called for a voice vote and the May minutes were approved. Joyce will send the approved minutes to Sarah Craig to be posted on the website.
Treasurer Diana Summers reported the Support Staff Council balance is $1,094.16. The Survival Adult Abuse Center fund balance is $2,164.04. The Support Staff Council Education Award has a balance of $908.48; however, awards for this semester have not come out yet.
Brenda has contacted Dr. Ambrose in regard to the Administrative Liaison. Monica Huffman replied via email letting Brenda know the question is on Dr. Ambrose's agenda for the August cabinet meeting.
Professional Staff Council Report
No report available.
Brenda reminded us that Lisa Schmidt is now the President of the Professional Staff Council. Beth Rutt is the Vice President/President Elect and will be providing reports to us in the future.
Past President Mike Jeffries called Brenda to inquire about co-sponsoring a staff ice cream social. Because of the late date and insufficient funds the idea was not pursued. We may want to keep it in mind for next spring or summer.
Committee Reports –
The Election Committee, represented by Becky White and Judy Kenney, has been meeting since June trying to determine what needs to be done since UCM is undergoing major organizational restructuring. The dust has not settled yet and we hesitate to hold an election until we can determine how best to assure sufficient representation for all areas in which support staff work.
It has been increasingly difficult to find individuals willing to serve as representatives and alternates. A discussion was had to consider at-large representation for all areas outside of academics. It was generally accepted that technology has changed so dramatically over the past few years that at-large representation may work well for us.
Currently we need to fill 1 representative and 2 alternate's positions for the remainder of the 2011-2012 academic year. These positions can be filled by any support staff on campus (at-large). It was determined to allow Becky to put out an email requesting volunteers for the positions. The Executive Committee has the ability to appoint individuals to fill the vacant positions until the next election.
The Elections Committee expects to solicit nominations for the 2012-13 term in February with elections completed by the end of March.
The Support Staff Council structure and bylaws will need to be changed due to the university restructuring. Brenda has already appointed a committee to review the current bylaws and to make recommendations concerning representation, changes in our Executive Officers structure as previously suggested by the Election Committee and a section to allow electronic voting as approved by the council.
Please make note of our meeting schedule as listed on the Support Staff Council website at http://ucmo.edu/ssc/meetings/dates.cfm.
We are in need of a support staff member to serve on the UCM Traffic and Parking Policy Committee (aka Parking Committee.) Brenda will send out an email to ask for a volunteer.
