Dr. Kurt Dean has been a faculty member since Fall of 1998. He teaches Field Natural History, Introduction to Ecology for non-majors, and Introduction to Ecology for majors.
His research projects include: the ecology and energetics of neotropical woodland migrant Passerines at riparian stopover sites in the northern Great Plains, and the ecology and breeding biology of an extra-limital population of Virginia's Warblers (Vermivora virginiae) in the southwestern Black Hills of South Dakota.
Dr. Kurt Dean was raised in northeast Nebraska and has lived on the northern Great Plains most of his life. He earned a B.S. degree from Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, Iowa in 1981 and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of South Dakota in 1985 and 1999, respectively. He joined the faculty in the fall semester of 1998 as a replacement while Dr. Wilson serves as acting Dean of Graduate studies. Dr. Dean has one son, Korey, 20, who attends the Neighborhood Playhouse Academy in New York City.
Non-academic interests include nearly anything done outdoors which is aerobic and produces adrenaline, such as mountain biking, down hill and cross-country skiing, backpacking, snowshoeing, trail running, and birding.
