About Me

I have been a faculty member here at UCM since 2000. My research interests include content area literacy, "reading maturity," and "transformational literacy" or reading, writing, and thinking that not only informs, but also transforms learners toward whole-person growth. I am also interested in the ways that online discussion boards can help facilitate increased cognitive complexity (depth of thought) and epistemological development (the lenses through which we know stuff), and I am interested in examining how utilizing online discussion boards may allow for increased cultural and intellectual capital for people who might be underprivileged or disenfranchised. In addition to these research interests, I have served in the past as the Co-Editor of the Journal of Content Area Reading, and I am working on some additional reading maturity and content area literacy projects. I have a website that focuses on dissemination of some of the reading maturity items, in case you are interested: www.KeenReading.org.

Beyond the classroom, I have a great family with whom I spend as much time as possible. As a group we often enjoy traveling, hiking, music, reading, playing sports art, watching movies, church and community activities, and just generally goofing around.
