Dr. Dawna Lisa (Buchanan) Butterfield, Chair
My past professional experience includes teaching Jr. High and High School English/Language Arts, K-12 school administration, and coaching varsity boys basketball. I have also worked as a university research fellow, in university administration, and as a consultant in educational publishing and in school-wide content area literacy programs. My research interests include "reading maturity" and "transformational literacy" or reading, writing, and thinking that not only informs, but also transforms learners toward whole-person growth and maturity. I am also interested in the ways that online discussion boards can help facilitate increased cognitive complexity (depth of thought) and epistemological development (the lenses through which we know stuff), and I am interested in examining how utilizing online discussion boards may allow for increased cultural and intellectual capital for people who might be underprivileged or disenfranchised. In addition to these research interests, I have served in the past as the Co-Editor of the Journal of Content Area Reading, and I am working on some additional reading maturity and content area literacy projects.
