Board Officially Names Multi-use Facility, Sets Room and Board Rates

WARRENSBURG, MO (April 2, 2014) – The University of Central Missouri Board of Governors officially named the new mixed-use student housing and retail facility, set room and board rates for the 2014-2015 academic year, and approved new dance and sport nutrition minors when it met on campus March 28.

After using the “The Crossing – South at Holden” as a working title for the new 325-bed mixed-use facility, the board unanimously approved the moniker as a permanent name for the facility. The building’s name not only literally describes the facility’s location and the natural crossing path for students on the northwest side of campus, but it also signifies the location and function of the new facility as a crossing between Warrensburg and UCM,  and “the crossing of living and learning at UCM,” according to university President Charles Ambrose. The name also represents the crossing of UCM’s identity from a traditional campus to a 24/7 university environment, and is symbolic of residents crossing from underclassmen to upperclassmen.

In other discussions regarding the Learning to a Greater Degree Contract for student completion, board members voted to not increase the room and apartment rates for Fiscal Year 2015, but did approve a total increase of 3.6 percent in room and board. This includes a 1.5 percent increase in the meal plan to fund capital improvements, as per the university’s agreement with its dining services provider Sodexo, and an additional 2.1 percent increase in the “Food Away from Home CPI Index.”

Students will pay $2,517 per semester for a double occupancy room, $3,117 for single occupancy rooms, $1,397 per semester for the first year required meal plan, and $1,140 per semester for the sophomore required meal plan.

Beginning this fall, monthly apartment rates will be: Foster/Knox/Nickerson, $679; Todd Hall, $679 for a one-bedroom unit and $836 for a two-bedroom apartment, utilities included; Central Village, $554 for a one-bedroom unit, $669 for a two-bedroom apartment, and $800 for a three-bedroom apartment; and Greenwood Park, $731 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. Greenwood Park and Central Village units are unfurnished, and residents pay for gas and electricity.

Board members approved a minor in dance, a program to be housed in the Department of Theatre and Dance within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The program is being made possible as the result of student interest. It will nurture and stimulate interest in dance with a balanced program that will offer dance techniques, kinesthetic awareness, improvisation and compositional skills, performance experience, and production knowledge. The program will particularly benefit students who have aspirations to teach at dance studios, work as dance performers and choreographers, or coach high school dance/drill teams, but have not had access to specific training in this area.

The sports nutrition minor approved by the board will be housed in the Department of Nutrition and Kinesiology within the College of Health, Science and Technology. Combining courses in dietetics and exercise science, the minor will meet the needs of multiple, health, nutrition and wellness professionals, and will explore basic exercise physiology, assessment/evaluation and an in-depth analysis of current nutritional principles. With the program, a new course on dietary supplements will be added. According to Michael Godard, chair of the Department of Nutritional and Kinesiology, an Education Advisory Board market analysis revealed that employers are looking for nutritionist and dieticians, along with those with a nutrition background, for nutrition/nutraceutical positions.  

The board approved purchasing the annual software license, support maintenance, and hosted services for the Blackboard Learning Management System. The cost will be $324, 626 for the period of July 1, 2014 through
June 30, 2015; $333,734 for the period of July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016; and $3423,116 for the period of July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2017.

The board also approved policy revisions to a 2002 policy that extended privileges to all employees retiring from the university in good standing after their 10th anniversary at UCM and granted emeritus status to faculty members, certain administrative staff including the president, vice presidents, deans or directors; assistant or associate vice presidents or deans; other staff members who report directly to the president or a vice president and staff members who held academic rank that were retiring in good standing. Revisions to the policy approved by the board are more inclusive and reflect the equal value UCM places on all of its employees. The revisions include: extending emeritus status to “other staff” members who have 20 years of service to UCM and who are retiring in good standing; an invitation to the annual event honoring retirees or at the appreciation breakfasts (or similar event) at which newly retired persons are presented scrolls signed by the Board of Governors; and automobile tags, upon request to the parking office, for complementary parking in resident student, commuter student, faculty/staff and Area M lots to all university employees retiring in good standing. The policy becomes effective April 1, 2014.
