UCM Launches ‘The UCM Experience Kickoff’ for Incoming Freshman

Contact: Mike Greife
WARRENSBURG, MO (Aug. 5, 2016) – First year students entering the University of Central Missouri this fall will receive a head start on learning about college life as they participate in the UCM Experience Kickoff Aug. 11-14.

Sponsored and coordinated by the UCM Office of Student Experience and Engagement, the new program was created to alleviate the apprehension that often accompanies the move to college, easing the transition into the freshman year.

"The move to college can be daunting for students and their families as they adjust to campus life," said Emily Bergsieker, assistant director of Student Activities. "UCM developed this program to allow new students to arrive on campus a few days before upperclassmen, giving them time to learn about their new home away from home and acquire the initial information and skills they will need for a successful start to a rewarding college career."

Freshman students living in university housing will arrive with their families on Thursday evening, Aug. 11, with move-in scheduled for 5-8 p.m. The Mule Team, made up of student volunteers, will be joined by faculty, staff and the executive board of Spotlight, the student programming organization, in assisting with the move-in. Events for student begin later that evening with floor meeting and social gatherings in the residence halls.

Commuting and non-traditional freshman students will join the group Friday morning, Aug. 12. Following Freshman Convocation, students will be treated to brunch, followed by the exploration of opportunities offered by the university’s academic colleges. Following lunch, the afternoon breakout sessions will cover a variety of topics, offering important information for incoming college freshmen. Students will end the day with a movie on the football field in Audrey Walton Stadium following entertainment by the Marching Mules marching band.

Saturday brings more breakout session conducted by faculty and staff volunteers, with an opportunity to visit the Engaged Community Fair, where students can learn more about Warrensburg and what it has to offer. Magician Todd Migliacci will provide evening entertainment.

The UCM Experience participants will have an opportunity to attend worship services on Sunday morning. Following lunch, small group sessions will continue, with the Union Experience in the Elliott Student Union providing a variety of opportunities for entertainment and fun from 8-11 p.m.

Residence halls will open for occupancy by upperclassmen at 10 a.m. Sunday.
