New Degree Focuses on Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise

WARRENSBURG, MO (April 23, 2010) – UCM’s Harmon College of Business Administration will extend its tradition of team-based service learning to its students through a new undergraduate degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise.

The degree program recently was approved by the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education. Enrollment in the new degree program will begin for the fall 2010 semester.

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise is designed to prepare students to design, launch and grow new social business ventures in the private, not-for-profit and government sectors. Graduates will be prepared to create business solutions and innovations with a social conscience, develop technology that is environmentally sustainable, and tackle social problems through private sector solutions.

The program builds on UCM’s Integrative Business Experience, a block of courses that allow students to experience firsthand the specific aspects of developing, financing and marketing a product and social service, with profits benefitting a local charity. The expansion of that concept into the new degree program is a collaborative effort of several areas of the university, including Harmon College, the Small Business Development Center, the Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and Development, and the Department of Sociology and Social Work.

Christine Wright, associate professor chair of the Department of Management and Business Communication, said no other university in Missouri or Kansas addresses for-profit entrepreneurship in a social enterprise setting. UCM’s major is unique in its focus on promoting new ventures that start from the ground up with practical, innovative or sustainable approaches to benefit society in general.

“Social enterprises are not traditional not-for-profit organizations that depend upon charitable giving for sustainability, nor are they simply socially responsible for-profit companies,” she said. “They are a new breed of organizations that create long-term social change by combining the passion for social change with an efficient marketing plan.”

Mary McCord, professor of management, noted that the new degree program was developed in response to a growing need for professionals in this new area of entrepreneurship.

“Entrepreneurship has grown quickly as an area of study in higher education,” said “In 1985, there were 250 courses available at colleges and universities across the nation. By 2008, that number had grown to more than 2,000,” she said.
