Sasek, Shell Named 2013 Charno Award Recipients

WARRENSBURG, MO (April 17, 2013) –Amada Sasek, a political science major from Moberly, and Kyle Shell, an occupational safety management major from Defiance, have been named the 2013 recipients of the University of Central Missouri’s prestigious Charno Award. The award is presented annually to the top male and female members of the senior class at UCM.

Sasek is a graduate of Moberly Senior High School and the daughter of Jon and Michelle Brooks of Moberly. Shell is a graduate of Francis Howell High School and the son of Mark and Liz Shell of Defiance.

While at UCM, Sasek served in the Student Government Association and was a member of The Honors College. She also served in positions of leadership in campus organizations, including Students for Political Action, College Democrats, and Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority.  She was student ambassador, alumni ambassador, Week of Welcome leader and UCM Orientation leader.

Sasek was selected to represent UCM at the Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life and the National Conference on Ethics in America at West Point.  She has served as a tutor, a supplemental instructor and a teaching assistant for the departments of Academic Enrichment and Political Science at UCM. 

In addition, she has served as assistant academic coordinator for the American Legion Missouri Boys State and the American Legion Auxiliary Missouri Girls State.  She also was a member of the American Democracy Project steering committee and the Panhellenic Council Judicial Review Board.  She has also volunteered for many charitable causes within the community.

Shell currently is the student member of the UCM Board of Governors. As a student at UCM, he served on the UCM  Homecoming leadership committee and participated in the annual Week of Welcome, MLK Service Day, Roaring Red, MO Volunteers, and the UCM blood drives.

In addition he served as a student ambassador, orientation leader, and IMPACT facilitator. He also served in leadership in Rho Sigma Kappa national safety honor society, the College Republicans and the UCM Student Government Association. He has been a member of the UCM chapter of DECA, the Houts-Hosey Hall Council and numerous campus ad-hoc committees.  He was also selected to represent UCM at the National Conference on Ethics in America at West Point.

Sasek and Shell were recognized during an April 16 reception honoring inductees into Who’s Who at the University of Central Missouri. Finalists for the Charno Award were selected from those inducted into Who’s Who at the University of Central Missouri. The Charno Award recipients also will be recognized during spring commencement Saturday, May 11, in the university’s Multipurpose Building.

The honor is named for George Charno, Sr., a Kansas City attorney who established the award in 1940 to recognize the outstanding male member of the graduating class. The companion award for the outstanding female class member was established in 1941.
