WARRENSBURG, MO (Dec. 16, 2014) – Six students represented the University of Central Missouri’s Harmon College of Business Administration and Professional Studies and the UCM Department of Economics, Finance, and Marketing at the semi-annual Federated Sales Competition Dec. 4 at UCM.

Also pictured are, left to right, Jimmy Smith and John Trusdale with  Federated Insurance; Cheryl Shattuck, assistant professor of marketing and team coach; Jose Mercado, chair of the Department of Economics, Finance and Marketing; and Tyler Hirlinger with Federated Insurance.

Ryan Hujar, a UCM marketing major, received first place, and Taylor Buerky, also a marketing major, placed second.  Larry Washington, a physical education major, was the third place winner.

The UCM team members were selected and coached for the competition by Cheryl Shattuck, assistant professor of marketing. Team members were selected according to the ranking of sales skills throughout the semester.  Each put their skills on display during the competitive role-played sales calls.

John Trusdale and Jimmy Smith, both representing Federated Insurance, judged the competitors and selected the winners. Tyler Hirlinger acted as the buyer for each competitor.

Following the Spring 2014 competition, Tyler Ahring, the winner of the Spring 2014 competition and 2014 graduate of UCM, was employed by Federated as marketing development trainee at Federated Mutual Insurance, Owatonna, Minn.

"Competing in the Federated Sales Competition was a great learning experience, as well as a fun and exciting challenge,” Hujar said. “Thank you again to both Federated and UCM for the opportunity to expand my learning outside the classroom."

Buerky commented, “The real life experience the Federated Insurance Competition was able to offer me will benefit me greatly as I enter into the work force. I'm honored to come from a school that puts on events like the Federated Insurance Competition to help its students strive to be the best in their respective fields.”

“The Federated Professional Sales Competition was an amazing learning experience for me! I received real-world advice and critiques from real-world sales professionals,” Washington said. “Because of the experience, I learned how to listen, talk, and even look at a potential client. I was given feedback on my attire, disposition, the content of my presentation, working with time constraints and a plethora of other subtle nuances the novice sales person would overlook. I never considered myself to be a salesman, but after the Federated Sales Competition, I learned that we are all salesman to one degree or another. I am so thankful for the privilege of competing and will use the lessons I learned in my future endeavors.”
