Six Honored by Board of Governors for Life-Saving Effort

WARRENSBURG, MO (March 3, 2009) – Six individuals have received certificates of appreciation from the UCM Board of Governors for helping to save the life of a university employee during a Jan. 27 medical emergency in the Multipurpose Building.

Certificates were presented during recent board meeting to Misti Ramsey, a visitor who was using the Multipurpose Building at the time of the incident; Christopher “Noland” Smith, building monitor; Michelle Allen, student life guard; Kim Anderson, Mules head basketball coach; Tara Matney, Multipurpose Building office professional; and Stephanie McKinney, a student employee. They were recognized by University President Aaron Podolefsky for aiding university employee Loye Henrikson after he experienced apparent cardiac arrest.

According to Podolefsky, while visiting the Multipurpose Building, Ramsey discovered Henrikson lying unconscious in the building’s corridor, so she began administering CPR. Smith and Allen then arrived on the scene and administered the automatic external defibrillator, and restored his heart beat. Anderson called for emergency assistance, while Matney and McKinney contacted the Department of Public Safety. Henrikson was later transported to a hospital for treatment, and is recovering. He was in attendance at the meeting.
