WARRENSBURG - 1/10/2007- The youngest legislator in the Missouri House of Representatives will bring his enthusiasm and experiences to UCM as keynote speaker for the annual Freedom Scholarship Dinner Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Rep. Leonard Hughes
Rep. Leonard (Jonas) Hughes, D-Kansas City, will speak at the dinner, planned for 6 p.m. in the UCM Multipurpose Building. Born and raised in Kansas City, he studied American Studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and he is the chief executive officer of Abravax, Inc., and the president of Young Freedom and a member of the board of directors of Freedom, Inc.
Hughes also serves as vice president of the Young Democrats of Kansas City, chair of the Minority State Caucus of the Young Democrats, and a member of the NAACP. He was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2004, where he currently is a member of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus. He is the son of Leonard Hughes III and Lisa Hughes of Kansas City.
Public Invited to Reception
A reception honoring Hughes is planned for 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the Multipurpose Building. The public is invited to attend.
Scholarships Presented to High School, UCM Students
The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of Freedom Scholarships to UCM students and high school students from Johnson County, Missouri and the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Community Events Included in Celebration
An ecumenical worship service is set for Sunday, Jan. 14 at the First Church of Nazarene of Warrensburg, 603 E. Hale Lake Road. A community service blood drive also is planned for Jan. 23-24 in the Elliott Union ballroom.
UCM's ABC Gospel Choir will host the eighth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Gospel Concert at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22 at the Elliot Union. Gospel choirs from the campus and surrounding communities will offer a rousing spiritual salute to the legacy of Dr. King.The concert is free and open to the public.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration is sponsored by ABC Gospel Choir; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; MO Volunteers; the NAACP; the Office of Alumni Relations and Development; the Office of Campus Activities; Office of Community Engagement; The Greater Warrensburg Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center; and the Warrensburg Ministerial Association.
