Contact: Jeff Murphy
WARRENSBURG, MO (Jan. 27, 2017) – Informational tables, presentations, and a “Safe Campus” walk/reception, are among special activities planned for Campus Safety Week, Monday-Friday, Jan. 30-Feb. 3 at the University of Central Missouri.

Activities are being planned by the UCM Office of Student Experience and Engagement and the Center for Multiculturalism and Inclusivity, in cooperation with the Department of Public Safety, University Health Center and the Office of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention (VSAP).  All of these activities are open to the university community.

The weeklong observance begins with campus safety awareness tables Monday-Wednesday in various areas across the university. These tables will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and provide information about resources related to different campus safety topics.

The first informational table will be available Monday, Jan. 30 in the Ward Edwards Building, and will include the distribution of information about campus safety resources such as the Student Assisted Foot patrol Escort (SAFE) Team, the Campus Eye smart phone reporting application, and helpful Department of  Public Safety contact information. On Tuesday, Jan. 31 there will be in the Elliott Student Union offering information about STDs/safe sex practices, including details about a free STD clinic in April to be conducted by the University Health Center, and more. Wednesday, Feb. 1 the Office of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention staff members will be in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center providing information about domestic violence and alcohol use.

An officer with the UCM Department of Public Safety will conduct a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) overview presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Elliott Student Union 240. They will register women who would like to participate in RAD training offered the following week.

Members of the campus community are invited to participate in the “Safe Campus” walk/reception from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2. The walk begins at the Center for Multiculturalism and Inclusivity in the Elliott Student Union and will involve members of the SAFE Team and Warrensburg Police Department. The walk concludes at the Center, where there will be a reception giving participants an opportunity to get to know the officers.

Alesha Bowman, multicultural outreach specialist at the Center for Multiculturalism and Inclusivity, is coordinating the week of festivities, including the “In Case of an Emergency” pop quiz event on Friday, Feb. 3. Students will visit about 20 different campus units where they will ask employees questions about different safety procedures that should be taken during emergencies such as a fire, tornado, intruder, and more. They will provide information to departments, as needed, and a small appreciation gift for those units that participate.

Anyone who has questions should contact Bowman at 660-543-8049 or
