WARRENSBURG, MO – The Office of Sustainability at the University of Central Missouri
will host the 2017 Teach-in on Sustainability from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb.
10, in Elliott Union 236-238.
The annual event brings to together speakers from varied professions to share their
expertise during a day of education and discussion about how to develop and maintain
a sustainable lifestyle. The event is free and open to the public.
Cathy Misko, Centerview, also known as “The Bee Lady,” will be the keynote speaker
for the event. A beekeeper for 28 years, Misko is the Kansas City area’s immediate
past president of the Midwestern Beekeepers Association. She implemented and chairs
the MBA Youth Scholarship Program, MBA and State Beekeeper of the Year Awards, and
recently founded the Heartland Beekeeping Partnership to bring advanced beekeeping
workshops and national speakers to western Missouri. She has taught beekeeping workshops,
public outreach presentations and advanced beekeeping classes.
In addition to her keynote address at noon, Misko also will present an informative
session of beekeeping during the teach-in.

- “Don’t Recycle! Do Something Better!” a discussion of reduction and reuse by the Warrensburg
Citizens for Environmental Action
- “Reducing Chemical Impact for Facilities” a discussion of reducing the impact of chemical
use by the cleaning industry by UCM employee Angela Spencer.
- “Intersections: Sustainability, Compassion, Justice” a discussion of how compassion
for animals of all species is related to sustainability by Warrensburg resident and
UCM employee Suzy Latare, a member of the Heartland Tree Alliance and the Warrensburg
Tree Board
- “Get Active, Make Positive Changes” by the Warrensburg CEA, with information on environmental
issues and changes in Warrensburg
- “The Inconvenience of Going Green” by UCM faculty member and ecopsychologist Steven
Schuetz, a discussion of how inconvenience often gets in the way of going greem
- “Sustainability at Home: Energy, Efficiency and Environmentally Responsible Designs”
by Ashley Oltmann, UCM instructor in interior design and owner of Blue Ink Consulting,
Inc.
- “Old? Yes! Irrelevant? No!” by U.S. Air Force veteran and UCM student Ashley Peters
offering information on how historic structures can be retrofitted for sustainability.
- “Sodexo Food Recovery Program” by Janet Decker, director of resident dining for Sodexo
at UCM, with information about the program implemented by Sodexo and adopted by UCM
that recover unused prepared foods for distribution through food banks.
- “Hypermiling Your Ride” by Warrensburg CEA, a presentation of techniques for increase
gas mileage
- “Rooftop Solar Collectors” by Warrensburg CEA and Sunsmart, a discussion of solar
energy options
- “Climate Change” by Warrensburg CEA, an examination of causes and concerns
