WARRENSBURG, MO – The University of Central Missouri Department of Music and the Missouri
Music Teachers Association present pianist Sean Chen, Bronze Medalist of the 2013
Van Cliburn International Piano competition, in recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4,
in Hart Recital Hall. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
Recognized by Huffington Post as a rising star with “an exceptional ability to connect
with an audience combined with an easy virtuosity,” Chen recently was named a 2015
fellow by the prestigious Leonore Annenberg Fellowship Fund for the Performing Arts.
He has performed with major orchestras, including the Fort Worth, Hartford, Hudson
Valley, Indianapolis, Knoxville, Louisiana Philharmonic, Milwaukee, North Carolina,
Pasadena, Phoenix, Plano, San Diego, Santa Fe, Tucson, and New West Symphony Orchestras,
as well as the Philadelphia, Indianapolis, and South Bay chamber orchestras.
He has collaborated with such esteemed conductors as Leonard Slatkin, Gerard Schwarz,
Nicholas McGegan, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Marcelo Lehninger, Nir Kabaretti, James Judd,
George Hanson, Hector Guzman, and Boris Brott. Solo recitals have brought him to major
venues worldwide, including Jordan Hall in Boston, Subculture in New York City, the
American Art Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., the National Concert Hall
in Taipei, Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Salle Cortot in Paris.
The recital is part of the Missouri Music Teachers Association Honors Auditions at
UCM. This four day event will bring hundreds of the highest achieving music students
from all over Missouri, ranging in age from four years old through graduate school,
to the UCM campus. They will compete for age group awards in solo and chamber music
performance, including passage onto the Music Teachers National Association competitions,
which are among the most prestigious music competitions in the United States.
