- A Writing and Drawing Children’s Book Workshop (online) will be presented online with students learning at their own pace while also participating
in individual virtual meetings. The course, offered June 5 through 28, focuses on
the process for writing and publishing your own children’s books.
Access to the internet, Google Docs and a device for video conferencing is required.
This course uses a variety of approaches and is open to illustrators, writers and
anyone interested in this topic. Cost is $150.
- Comics and Graphic Storytelling (in-person) will be offered from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays June 5 through 28 at
UCM’s Missouri Innovation Campus in Lee’s Summit. During the course, high-school students
will be challenged to write, illustrate and publish their own comics. Instruction
will include how to make meaningful personal content in a highly designed and drawn
aesthetic.
Students with access to their own drawing tablets are encouraged to bring them to
this course. Comics and Graphic Storytelling incorporates a hybrid approach to art
making and explores both traditional and digital practices. Prior drawing knowledge
is recommended. Cost is $150.

Instructor for both courses is published author and illustrator John F. Malta, a Kansas
City-based illustrator and art director who has worked on projects with the New York
Times, Netflix, Adult Swim, the New Yorker and others. His most recent book, “Intergalactic
Moving Day,” was published by POW! Kids Books and distributed worldwide by Simon and
Schuster. Throughout the year, he travels North America, exhibiting new work at various
