In Sport Management, we provide relevant and applied learning experiences to prepare and equip Sport Management professionals for successful careers. A diverse faculty models servant leadership with expertise in various Sport Management specialties, placing your needs as a top-most priority. Our vision is to become a program of national distinction in Sport Management through the quality of our learning experiences, the success of our students, and the impact of our faculty as national leaders in the discipline. The motivation within the program is the passion and inspiration of seeing students experience success and realize a sense of ownership in their personal and professional development.

The sport management degree programs at University of Central Missouri have been granted Candidacy Status by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA), located in Fort Collins, CO, USA

Our mission

We create a broad-based learning environment though traditional and experiential learning. UCM Sport Management serves our students to develop the knowledge and skills, enabling them to be successful sport industry professionals. Faculty members with expertise in various sport management areas models unique and diverse educational opportunities.

Five experienced faculty possess valuable field experiences as well as rich research backgrounds. They are the foundation of the service-oriented culture within the program. Each have expertise to share.


Learning Environment

What is the learning environment like?
Class sizes ranging from 15-35 students, each led by talented and engaging professors, create diverse and relevant learning experiences. Each classroom is equipped with multi-media platforms and spaces designed to optimize the learning process. Classrooms, meeting rooms, computer labs, and offices are all housed conveniently together in a recently renovated LEED Gold Certified Building and adjacent to a newly constructed Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Students have ready access to engage the Sport Management industry. Close proximity to Kansas City and the metropolitan area provide convenient rich experiences involving professional sports (KC Chiefs, KC Royals, Sporting KC, Kansas Speedway, Missouri Mavericks Hockey, KC T-Bones Baseball, etc.) athletic sports (several universities, numerous high schools, etc.) recreational sport (commercial, non-profit, and public), retail, a sports commission, a collegiate administrative headquarters, and a broad spectrum of other sport industry players. In addition, UCM’s Athletics programs have a rich tradition of success and offer Sport Management students very convenient and valuable opportunity to learn and sharpen their abilities in marketing, facility and event management, sports information, and sport media and broadcasting. Both undergraduate and graduate programs are highly rated and an outstanding value in Sport Management education (see links). We have an active student organization and a scholarship fund available to assist Juniors and Seniors majoring in Sport Management.

Internships

Our experienced internship coordinator provides professional guidance for each individual. In addition to the personalized mentorship, we encourage students to network. Students can also find their internships through personal contact or outreach to an organization of their interest.

Strong relationships exist with state and regional sport and recreational sport organizations as well as a myriad of other opportunities in the sport industry. Our students intern all over the U.S. and world depending on individual career aspirations.

 

Jobs-How successful are our graduates?

UCM Sport Management has an 86% of job placement rate. Our graduates are working for a variety of organizations including Lead community and after-school sports programs; Academic services in high schools or colleges; Professional sporting groups in the marketing, health, promotions and compliance sectors; Fitness- and health-focused positions for people who want to work directly with the athlete; Retail industry representing sporting goods stores and more.

 

Experiential Learning

What professional relationships enhance a student’s experience?
Students have numerous opportunities to build professional relationships with sport organizations and participate in sport events throughout their academic training. Courses provide opportunities to participate in numerous sport industry experiential learning in addition to networking and volunteering opportunities.
