Dawn Pauling

Instructor of Biology

B.S. Wildlife Biology and Conservation, University of Alaska Fairbanks
M.S. in Biology, University of Central Missouri

I previously lived in Alaska and moved to Missouri in 2012. While in Alaska working on my undergraduate degree, I worked for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in wildlife veterinary services conducting disease surveillance. During this time, I gained invaluable experience in the field of wildlife diseases and began conducting research investigating several aspects of wildlife disease. This was incorporated into my Master’s thesis where I surveyed for gastrointestinal parasites in different captive populations of an endangered mammal, the Scimitar-horned oryx. This research also established baseline fecal glucocorticoid levels in this species. I became an instructor at UCM in 2015.

My current research continues to focus on pathogen presence in wildlife populations and the changing dynamics in relation to ecological interactions, environmental conditions, and anthropogenic factors. I also focus on mammalian species in regards to wildlife disease, diversity, and population studies. Current research projects involving both undergraduate and graduate students include work with Toxoplasma gondii, surveying for pathogens in invasive feral hog populations and feral hog impacts on native species populations, surveying for pathogens in ticks, the changing dynamics of tick populations in some parts of Missouri, Tularemia presence in small mammals, and population studies of Eastern cottontails in state managed areas.
During my time as an instructor at UCM, I have taught Ecology, Animal Biology, Mammalogy, Field Techniques, Wildlife Policy and Law, and Wildlife Diseases. I have also taught Introduction to Biology, Human Biology, and Human Anatomy at another institution. I am the co-faculty advisor for The Wildlife Society and the advisor for The Environmental Society.
