Literacy Education
Reading and writing promote critical thinking, communication and other vital skills necessary for all students to learn and grow. Understand how to best teach and support those in your classroom when you study Literacy — as a rising or current educator — at the University of Central Missouri.
UCM’s Literacy faculty leads core coursework for undergraduate students to gain a solid base of literacy knowledge, whether you’re pursuing Elementary, Middle School or Secondary Education. We also offer standards-based graduate programs that not only enhance current teachers’ abilities but also their career opportunities.
Literacy offers several pathways to expand your skills and knowledge
- Literacy: Become an expert in the foundations of reading and writing as well as in the use of instructional approaches and curriculum development.
- ELL: Learn how to better serve the needs of English language learners (ELLs) and achieve certification for K–12 teaching, or get professional preparation for teaching English as a Second Language in college or other settings, domestically or abroad.

As an undergraduate student developing a strong Literacy education foundation, you’ll have ample opportunities to apply your learning and make lasting connections. When completing one of our Literacy-specific master’s degree programs, you’ll be able to:
- Develop your research skills: As a graduate student of UCM’s Literacy programs, you’ll steadily build your research skills under the guidance of our expert faculty.
- Build your network: In addition to the connections you’ll make as part of your Literacy coursework, you’ll be introduced to professional associations such as the International Literacy Association and Mid-America Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. Join one or more organizations to learn, serve and network.
What can you do with a degree in one of UCM’s Literacy programs?
The specialized training you’ll get as part of UCM’s Literacy program areas will empower you to teach students to effectively read and write and, in turn, develop vital life skills.
Our graduate Literacy curriculum is aligned with national standards and Missouri K–12 Special Reading Teacher Certification. You may also qualify for other roles such as reading coach, literacy coach or reading specialist.
When you choose to focus your studies on helping English language learners, your coursework will be aligned with the Missouri English Language Learners Teacher Certification, or you may even decide to take your work — and life — abroad.
