Preceptor Information

Welcome to the MS Clinical Nutrition Graduate Program (FEW/GP) at the University of Central Missouri. Thank you for your willingness to serve as a preceptor for our graduate students as they complete their Supervised Experiential Learning (SEL) requirement.
This section offers:

  • Your role before and during supervised experiential learning,
  • Your free online program orientation, and
  • Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEUs) just for you.

Preceptor role before the rotation begins

  • Become familiar with Competency Based Education and the Future Education Model. Free training webinars are available. (See below).
  • Complete the 3-minute preceptor survey to match areas of practice, number of days you can precept, hours of the day and prioritize your training needs.

Preceptor role during supervised experiential learning (SEL)

The MS Clinical Nutrition Graduate Program (FEM/GP) 1.5 years long and students will be in clinical SEL during the summer semester and in community and food service management SEL in the fall semester.

We have also provided some examples of what to cover prior to and on the first day of orientation with a student: Student Orientation Checklist

You, as the preceptor, are asked to:

  • Provide the supervised experiential learning opportunities for the student.
  • Allow the student to shadow and observe you; then—
  • Supervise the student as they perform as much of your duties as possible.
  • Co-sign the student’s notes and recommendations; and
  • Also, we require that the student complete a weekly “log” that proves the number of hours, conditions and populations encountered by the student that week.
  • Complete various evaluation forms on the student’s work and professional behavior. We will use Trajecsys, an online evaluation platform, and provide you with training and access. If desired, preceptors are encouraged to contact the student’s assigned SEL faculty to provide feedback on the student’s progress via email or phone.
