The English Language Institute offers online programs including:

Online English Program Badge

Online English Program

The Online English Program (OEP) features courses in reading, writing, communication skills, and grammar.

These are online, non-credit courses that can be counted towards UCM's English Proficiency Requirements. Students are given a placement test to determine level (Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced). Courses are asynchronous and include regular, virtual meetings with the instructor. 

Students receive a certificate of completion and 4.2 Continuing Education Units. Students should expect to spend 3-5 hours per week per online class. 

These courses are not for F or J visa students.

ELI Aviation English Online Program Badge

Aviation English Online Program

The English Language Institute's Aviation English Online Program prepares students to meet and exceed the Level-4 ICAO rating to comply with the FAA regulations.

The program consists of:

  • one 6-week course to introduce students to voice-only communication in plain English for safety during flight instruction, recreation, or commercial application. Students will build speaking and listening skills within the context of aviation topics (e.g., pre-flight checks and ground movements). 
  • one 6-week course to build greater speaking and listening skills for voice-only communication in plain English. Students will engage in simulated voice-only communication within the context of aviation topics (e.g., cruising and en route events).

Online Program Highlights

The online program's courses feature engaging instruction and practice with plain English voice-only communication, terminology, pronunciation, and more in an aviation context.

Schedule and Credit

Students are enrolled at UCM in a zero credit hour, short-term program through Online and Learning Engagement. Students complete two online courses with six aviation-context focused modules. Students will receive a UCM grade report, a program certificate of completion, and a digital badge.

English for Corporate Managers Digital Badge (Online)

English for Corporate Managers (Online)

This business English program consists of 2 courses, each lasting 6 weeks. It is designed for managers and executives in the corporate environment who want to improve their interpersonal communication skills in face-to-face or virtual settings, presentation skills, report writing and electronic communications. The focus is on vocabulary, grammar, and American negotiation skills in a corporate setting. Certificate of Successful Completion awarded.

Course Descriptions

Corporate English for Managers I: This course focuses on developing the range of vocabulary and strengthening of grammar skills (e.g. in correspondence, reports, and presentations) of the corporate executive. Interpersonal communication skills for both formal and informal settings as well as for virtual environments are introduced. It is designed for executives wishing to refine broader vocabulary, situational English communication, and presentation skills.

Corporate English for Managers II: CEM II builds on CEM I. This course focuses on enhancing English for report-writing and on showing more effective communication during virtual and face-to-face meetings. Active listening skills and language for negotiation skills are honed for more meaningful and culturally-sensitive discussion in both formal and informal settings. For executives with advanced-level English skills.

  • The courses meet two times per week with 1.5 hours per class.
  • The classes are offered online or face-to-face (on-site or at the Missouri Innovation Campus in Lee's Summit, Missouri).

English for Administrative Assistants (Online)

This business English program consists of 2 courses, each lasting 6 weeks. It is designed for administrative assistants in the business environment who want to improve their speaking and writing skills for inter-office and public communication. The focus is on phone and e-mail English, letter writing, grammar, and pronunciation. Certificate of Successful Completion awarded.

Course Descriptions

English for Administrative Assistants I: This course introduces vocabulary and guides administrative staff to identify circumstances which specific spoken and written "types" of English are necessary to build effective communication for inter-office and public exchanges. Intermediate level of English needed.

English for Administrative Assistants II: EAAII builds on EAAI goals. This course enhances administrative staff abilities to speak and write using work-appropriate English in public and inter/intra office communication. Staff will develop a portfolio of templates for English phrasing in e-mails and reports. High-intermediate to Advanced level of English needed.

Online Customized English ShortCourse Badge

Online Customized English ShortCourse

Students consult with an ELI Course Planner to create a course specifically designed for the student. Examples include EFL Teacher Training, TOEIC Preparation, Pronunciation and Intonation, etc.

Students should expect to spend 4-6 hours per week plus 1 hour weekly with virtual sessions with each instructor. Each course is 3 weeks long. (Expected total number of hours to complete each course: 20)

Online English Language ShortCourses

Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Intensive English courses are offered. There are 4 semi-intensive classes in each level (Reading, Writing, Grammar, Communication Skills).

Students should expect to spend 2-3 hours per week plus 1 hour weekly in virtual sessions with each instructor. Each course is 3 weeks long. (Expected total number of hours needed to complete each course: 12)

Language, Literature, and Arts ShortCourse

Students study works of literature, film, and music and how their diversity has influenced American life in the 20th and 21st century. Language Focus: vocabulary, writing, reading, listening, speaking. Literature and Arts Focus: various authors, music and film with cultural impact. Students should expect to spend 4-6 hours per week on this class plus 1 hour weekly with virtual sessions with the instructor. This course is 3 weeks long. (Expected total number of hours to complete this course: 20)
