Now finding time to enjoy his farm with exotic animals, manage rental properties and a limousine service, Dr. Gary L. Curtis retired in December 2002 as financial aid counselor emeritus/assistant professor emeritus of administration, supervision, and higher education. He dedicated about 33 years to serving Central and its students.
An alumnus, Dr. Curtis obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Central, and an educational doctorate from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He served for two years as head track coach and physical education teacher in Eureka before joining the staff at Central in 1969 as an academic advisor.
After two years in Academic Advising, Dr. Curtis continued to grow in his service to the institution, becoming assistant registrar in 1973, director of Veteran Services in 1975, director of Veteran Services and Job Corps in 1978, and assistant director of Financial Aid in 1980. He served at that post for 12 years, and became financial aid counselor in 1992, where he devoted the next 10 years to helping students navigate through the complex world of financial aid.
Dr. Curtis has been active in professional organizations such as the Midwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and the Missouri Association of Student Financial Aid Personnel, where he is a former vice president. He has also been active in local groups such as the Warrensburg Lion’s Club and the Johnson County chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
