Graduate Scholars Symposium

Graduate students, faculty, and staff from all disciplines are encouraged to present their research at the annual Graduate Scholars Symposium at the University of Central Missouri. This symposium takes place during the spring semester each year.

The goals of the symposium are to showcase the outstanding quality and diversity of graduate-level research at UCM, in addition to providing students with the opportunity to practice and enhance their communication skills with those outside of their discipline.  Students who graduated in Fall 2017 are still eligible to apply.  This event also provides opportunities for all participants to interact with their peers while receiving feedback from faculty, staff, and colleagues.

Event Details

The 2018 Graduate Scholars Symposium was held on Wednesday, April 18th, 2018 in the Elliot Student Union Ballroom.

Set up of posters and judging of the student entries will take place in the morning and early afternoon. Judging times will assigned based on the student's availability.


3:00 pm - Formal Presentation, Keynote Speakers and Announcement of Awards

5:00 pm - Open Poster Viewing, Public Presentations and Reception



Students who select to have their presentation entered into the student competition have the opportunity to win awards. The awards consists of a cash prize and certificate. There are two levels of awards, Level 1 - $100 and Level 2 - $50.

Deadline for registration is Monday, March 5th, 2018, by 5pm. Students will be notified of acceptance by Monday, March 12th, 2018.  Accepted students are required to attend a poster presentation workshop with the Office of Graduate Education and Research.  Assistance will be provided to the student to create and print posters before the Symposium.

Participation from all disciplines is encourage for this event. Both traditional posters and nontraditional entries are encouraged. If you wish to enter a performance or other similar works, please contact Graduate Education & Research for assistance.

Judging Rubric


In preparation for the Symposium, students are required to attend at a Poster Workshop.  Workshops are scheduled for Tuesday, March 13th and Wednesday, March 14th.  Both sessions will be open at 3:30pm and close at 5:30pm.  Students can attend any time during this time frame.  The workshops are held in JCKL 1220.  This room has computers available for students to start and continue working on their poster.  Students should bring all materials needed to work on their poster.  Instructions will be given and time available to work on the presentation.  In addition, sample posters will be available to view.  Students should use both sessions to work on their poster with assistance from the GER Office.  Faculty and staff are also welcome.

New Online Category:  E-entry!

New to the 2018 Symposium is an online category. E-entries will be available only to students enrolled in entirely online programs at UCM. Students will create a 3 minute voice over PowerPoint Presentation to submit for judging and entry into the event. This category will be judged and receive awards separate from on campus entries.

Final presentations are due Monday, April 2nd, 2018, by 11:59pm, via email to  E-entry winners/awards will be announced on Monday, April 9th, 2018.  Winners will also be recognized during the formal presentation on April 18th.

All E-entries will be available for viewing on iPads during the day of the Symposium.
