Communication Disorders

Do you want a career that lets you make a positive impact on the lives of children and adults struggling with speech and language differences? The University of Central Missouri’s undergraduate and graduate Communication Disorders programs will prepare you to excel in a wide range of careers and professional settings, including hospitals, schools, clinics and many others.

UCM’s Communication Disorders programs prepare you for career options

  • Speech-language pathology assistant: When you earn our undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders, you’ll be qualified to work as a speech-language pathology assistant in Missouri schools and may be qualified to assume such positions in other states. You’ll support and aid speech-language pathologists as they work with children and families. This is both a great career option and a means of gaining real-world experience to prepare for graduate school in the future.
  • Speech-language pathologist: Earning a graduate degree in Communication Disorders prepares you to become a speech-language pathologist working with children and adults who have speech, hearing, swallowing, fluency and memory problems. Our ASHA-accredited programs will qualify you to apply for certification by ASHA and receive state licensure.

Clinical practice

We offer one of the few Communication Disorders programs in the country that provide undergraduates with real-world clinical experiences. In your last two semesters, you’ll first shadow a graduate mentor working with a client before moving up to working with your own client in 50-minute sessions under the supervision of a faculty clinical instructor. This professional experience will give you an advantage when applying for jobs and graduate programs.

State-of-the-art labs

Whether you’re earning your BS or your MS in our Communication Disorders programs, you’ll have access to our dedicated speech-pathology labs. These include Voice Labs and the Augmented and Alternative Communication Labs, in addition to the Speak Out! Parkinson’s Voice Project, where graduate students and their undergraduate mentees gain valuable experience working with clients.

Experienced faculty

Take advantage of our small class sizes to work closely alongside faculty mentors who are dedicated, passionate and caring practitioners in the field. They work in hospitals and schools, as well as in their own private practices. They bring their experience and expertise into the classroom to help students prepare for the daily requirements of their career.

What can you do with a degree in one of UCM’s Communication Disorders programs?

Speech-language pathologists are always in high demand, since they provide necessary care and assistance for individuals who are struggling with communication, swallowing and memory issues. They work in a number of exciting settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools, rehabilitation centers, universities and long-term care facilities. Many also work as traveling speech-language pathologists.

Unlike most other Communication Disorders programs, we provide clinical practice that lets you work face-to-face with a real client, whether you’re a graduate or undergraduate student. Our graduates enter jobs and advanced education programs more confident and ready to take on serious responsibilities sooner.
