UCM Gallery of Art & Design Presents Two Summer Exhibitions

By Nicole Lyons, July 1, 2025

The University of Central Missouri (UCM) Gallery of Art and Design presents two new exhibitions: “Communication: The Annual Exhibition of Mid-Missouri Artists Inc.” and “The Things We Don’t Talk About.” Both exhibitions will be displayed from July 9 to Aug. 6 in the UCM Art Center.

Mid-Missouri Artists Inc. (MMA) is a regional arts organization that supports artists and promotes the arts. The members meet regularly to discuss art and the business of being an artist. They also exhibit together at least twice yearly, including the annual summer exhibition at the UCM Gallery of Art and Design. This year's exhibition theme is "Communication” with each artist interpreting the theme through a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media and sculpture. “Communication” will be in the Main Gallery.

“The Things We Don't Talk About” is a photographic portrait exhibition curated by Katie Jacobs, Ph.D., professor of Psychological Science at UCM. The exhibition explores the hidden realities of mental health challenges. The nucleus of the exhibition is a musical concept album by artist Ramona Clay, also titled “The Things We Don't Talk About.” Each photograph in the exhibition is a portrait of a real person and a personification of one track on the album. A story about the person accompanies each portrait. The photos were taken by Ellie Whitesell, a recent Art and Design graduate. “The Things We Don't Talk About” will be in Gallery 115. Jacobs will offer a gallery talk at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 16.

The public is invited to a reception celebrating both exhibitions from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, in the Art Center. The New Century Dulcimer Ensemble will play during the reception, and refreshments will be served.

The UCM Gallery of Art and Design is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Admission is free and open to the public.
