UCM Department of Public Safety officers provided supplemental staffing during FIFA
World Cup events in Kansas City this summer.
As hundreds of thousands of soccer fans from around the world descended on Kansas
City this summer, University of Central Missouri (UCM) police officers were among
the law enforcement professionals helping ensure one of the world's largest sporting
events remained safe and secure.
Through a mutual aid partnership with the Kansas City Police Department, UCM officers
provided supplemental staffing at the FIFA Fan Festival at Liberty Memorial and assisted
during FIFA World Cup matches at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
The assignment placed UCM officers alongside local, state and federal agencies in
a coordinated public safety operation that had been years in the making. Managing
the massive crowds at both the Fan Festival and match venue was a significant undertaking,
requiring agencies from nearly a dozen states to supplement Kansas City resources
and provide a highly visible public safety presence.
"We're always willing to help our regional partners when they need us," UCM Director
of Public Safety and Chief of Police Bill Brinkley said. "Events like the FIFA World Cup don't happen
overnight. They take years of planning and incredible coordination between agencies.
Having the opportunity to be part of something of this scale is rewarding because
we know we're helping ensure a safe experience for everyone attending. It's also an
outstanding training opportunity for our officers. Working alongside agencies from
across the region and the country gives them valuable experience they can bring back
to serve the UCM community."
The assignment provided law enforcement experience that is difficult to replicate
in traditional policing environments. Officers worked in a variety of operational
roles, integrating into a unified command structure responsible for securing venues,
managing crowds and responding to incidents in one of the highest-profile public safety
environments in the country.
Participating in this deployment not only strengthened the officers' skills in communication
and event security but also reflected the strong regional partnerships UCM Public
Safety maintains.
The deployment was funded through federal pass-through grants awarded to the Kansas
City Police Department, which reimbursed participating agencies for their assistance
during tournament operations.
As the activities in Kansas City conclude, UCM officers return to Warrensburg with
firsthand experience from an international event that demanded precision planning,
interagency collaboration and a shared commitment to public safety — experience that
directly strengthens the department's readiness for major events on campus and throughout
the region.
