UCM Gallery of Art & Design Presents a New Painting Exhibition, ‘Protruding Pigments’

The University of Central Missouri (UCM) Gallery of Art and Design announces an intriguing painting exhibition, “Protruding Pigments,” opening Monday, Oct. 5. 

“Protruding Pigments” is a solo exhibition featuring paintings by artist Sammie Jane Hardewig, whose studio practice “hyper-fixates on the materiality of reclaimed house paint.”

 

“I challenge (the paint) to redefine its intended purpose of covering, protecting and elevating surfaces around us by using it to create three-dimensional forms,” her website biography states. “I’m interested in discovering how self-sufficient this material can be while allowing material agency and the opportunity to fail or prevail. I use reclaimed paints with unknown histories to ensure uncertainty and irregularity. The skeletal armatures that coexist with the paint skins are inspired by bodily gestures, daily observations from my surroundings, and/or a feeling.”

Hardewig earned a master’s in Visual Art and a Museum Studies Certificate at the University of Kansas, and two bachelor’s degrees, Visual Art and Art History, from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She has exhibited in numerous galleries across the Midwest. She was awarded Best in Show for her “Debut the New” virtual exhibition with the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, Kansas, and third place in the eighth annual Midwest Open at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago.

Hardewig lives in Marquette, Michigan. She is the collections curator for the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University and the gallery technician for the Huron Mountain Gallery Club at the Peter White Public Library.

 

The public is invited to stop by the gallery Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 to see the progress as Hardewig installs her exhibition on campus. 

 

Hardewig will speak about her work as part of the Kleppe Visiting Artist Lecture Series at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in Lovinger 1290. Admission is free and open to the public, and a virtual option is available. Zoom registration is required to attend virtually. Following the talk, the Gallery of Art & Design will host a closing reception with light refreshments from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The UCM Gallery of Art and Design is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free and open to the public.
