Performing Arts Series Presents A Capella Group 'Vocalosity'

By Mike Greife, September 28, 2016

WARRENSBURG, MO - The Performing Arts Series, in cooperation with UCM’s student programming organization, The Spotlight, brings the New York touring group Vocalosity to the UCM campus at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, in Hendricks Hall.

Vocalosity is the all-new live concert event from the creative mind of artistic producer Deke Sharon that takes a cappella to a whole new level. This fast-paced production features an all-star ensemble of diverse young vocalists singing some of today’s hits in brand-new arrangements that set a new standard for 10-part harmony.

No genre of music is off limits in the world of a cappella, and Vocalosity covers them all, from 10th century Gregorian chant and classical choral to barber shop quartet and bouncing doo-wop, all the way to an exploration of the current sound of a cappella with music from The Beatles, Bruno Mars and more. Combine that with direction and choreography from original Stomp cast member Sean Curran, and you have an exhilarating evening of song unlike anything ever seen or heard, live on stage.

“Over the past few years, a cappella has grown from what was once considered a stuffy Ivy League activity to a pop culture phenomenon beloved by people of all ages,”said Sharon, who serves as artistic director, music director and co-creator of the production. “Vocalosity is my dream team, an all-star ensemble of diverse young singers each with a unique style and personality. Most vocal groups aspire to create one sound and style, homogenizing the character of their singers, but this group is the exact opposite, weaving a variety of tapestries from different combinations of voices and characters.”

Hailed as “the father of contemporary a cappella” by “Entertainment Weekly”, Sharon has served as on-site music director and vocal producer for the smash hit films “Pitch Perfect” and “Pitch Perfect 2,” as well as vocal producer of NBC’s “The Sing-Off.”

Tickets for Vocalosity are available online at ucmpas.com, at the Central Tickets Box Office, Monday-Friday in Administration 100 from 9 a.m. to noon, and by calling 660-543-8888.

Financial assistance has been provided through a grant by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
