Cybersecurity - Area 2: Secure Software Development BS

The University of Central Missouri's Cybersecurity program is a leader both in the State of Missouri and the nation. Our Cybersecurity program is one of the only two ABET accredited programs in Missouri, and one of only a handful of accredited Cybersecurity programs in the nation. Achievement of ABET accreditation is an indicator that our program exhibits the level of quality demanded by industry and that we are able to produce graduates that are workforce ready.

The program curricula provide foundational and hands-on training in technical, systems, human, organizational, and societal aspects of cybersecurity. The programs includes courses like cryptography, secure programming, network security, web applications security, cyber-physical systems security, information assurance, ethical hacking, usable security, and computer forensics. The curricula are designed according to the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CDE) Education Program Knowledge Units jointly sponsored by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). We provide an unmatched education to students in the region, and we're proud of it. With the demand for qualified technical personnel far exceeding the available supply, the opportunities awaiting Cybersecurity graduates are nearly limitless.

What will I study?

Our Secure Software Development track is for students who are interested in designing and writing software with security built-in from scratch. The students would learn finding vulnerabilities in code and fixing them before hackers exploit these vulnerabilities. This track requires strong programming skills and is more focused towards building the next generation of secure software. The students in this track would typically work towards getting CSSLP, GSSP, and Security+ certifications.

Experienced Faculty

We have highly qualified and dedicated faculty members who have extensive experiences in research and/or industry. Six of them received specialized information security training through the SANS Institute. In addition, several faculty hold highly regarded cybersecurity certificates such as GIAC Certified Forensic Examiner (GCFE), Certified Penetration Tester (GPEN), Certified Web Applications Penetration Tester (GWAPT), Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP), Certified Secure Java Developer (GSSP-Java), Certified Windows Security Administrator (GCWN) and Certified Security Professional (GSEC).

About Cybersecurity

What is Cybersecurity? 

Cybersecurity, also referred to as information security, focuses on protecting computers, networks, programs and data from unintended or unauthorized access, change or destruction. 

Why is Cybersecurity important? 

Recent cyber attacks on large retailers and health insurance providers again highlighted the need for increased cybersecurity education and training of existing workforce and preparing a new generation of cybersecurity workers ready for securing our cyberspace from intruders and attackers. The Federal government has recognized the importance of cybersecurity at all levels and a Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) was established by President George W. Bush in 2008 and continued by President Obama. CNCI Initiative#8 puts emphasis on expanding Cyber Education “to develop a technologically-skilled and cyber-savvy workforce with the right knowledge and skills”. 

During a Senate hearing in March 2013, the nation's top intelligence officials warned that cyber attacks and digital spying are the top threats to national security, eclipsing terrorism. As a matter of fact, Missouri ranks 5th in the U.S. in the number of cybersecurity breaches according to the St. Louis Business Journal.

Program Educational Objectives

Within a few years of graduation, a graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Cybersecurity will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the program to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to create solutions to cybersecurity problems in industry, government or academia appropriate to their levels of professional experience.
  • Be capable of gauging the impact of cybersecurity risk for an organization or on society, and possess knowledge of the ethical, social and professional responsibilities of their work.
  • Have effective oral and written communication skills and demonstrate the ability to contribute effectively to the benefit of teams.
  • Continue to update their professional knowledge and skills to adapt to innovation and change, and be successful in their professional work and/or graduate studies.

Student Outcomes

Graduates of the program will have an ability to:

  1. Analyze a complex computing problem and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
  3. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
  4. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
  5. Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
  6.  Apply security principles and practices to maintain operations in the presence of risks and threats.

Careers in Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity jobs are no longer only in highly specialized niche organizations. Instead, these jobs now span all sectors from defense, homeland security, and financial institutions to healthcare, law enforcement, and education. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the outlook for cybersecurity jobs (a typical position is information security analyst) is very positive. Cybersecurity is the second fastest growing occupation in the United States with a projected growth rate of 37% over the next decade. In Missouri, cybersecurity is the third fastest growing occupation with a projected growth rate of 28% over the next decade. 

USNews has ranked cybersecurity fifth in the list of top college majors that lead to jobs. In an article in Washington Post, Tom Kellerman, a former member of the President’s cybersecurity commission was quoted “The government needs to hire at least 10,000 experts in the near future and the private sector needs four times that number." A survey reported by CIO revealed that Cybersecurity salaries are three times the national average.

Cyber Range

The program has state-of-the-art computing labs to support both instruction and research needs. Cyber Range (Cyber Central) is used to provide a virtual network environment for hands-on exercises in cybersecurity. Labs in courses like Ethical Hacking, Computer and Network Forensics, and Web Applications Security are supported in Cyber Central. Cyber Central is powered by NDG Netlab+ and provides a virtual lab that would help students practice lab exercises on the virtual network from anywhere using internet access. Many of the cybersecurity lab exercises are dangerous to perform on a live network and could pose a security risk to the institutional or home networks. Cyber Central provides an isolated virtualized network that would not interfere with other networks and is safe for practicing hacking exercises.

Get involved!

Explore Cybersecurity outside the classroom by joining a Cybersecurity student organization. These include:

  • Cyber Mules, a cybersecurity student club that is chapter of the National Cybersecurity Student Association (NCSA)
  • Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) student chapter
  • Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), an honor society for Computing and Information disciplines 
By participating in these organizations, you will learn from guest speakers, attend regional and national conferences, and participate in state and/or national Cybersecurity competitions.
