Biology Minor

Do you want to pursue a business career in health care or pharmacology? Are you considering a future in animal science or another ag-based job? Maybe you’re thinking about a future in architecture or historical conservation and could benefit from a background in biology?

At the University of Central Missouri, our Biology minor is designed to give you a firm foundation in biology literacy and theory, so you have a greater understanding of the science of life and living organisms. A Biology minor complements nearly any bachelor’s degree, providing you with the knowledge and skills to pursue careers that touch nearly every industry.

What you will study

In just seven courses, you’ll complete this minor and gain a strong foundation in cellular, ecological and molecular biology.

You’ll start by taking an introductory course that exposes you to the basics of biology, including the chemistry of life, cell structure, genetics, mechanisms of evolution, the evolutionary history of biological diversity and ecology. You can then select additional courses based on your career aspirations.

Focus your Biology minor with coursework such as:

  • Basic Genetics GE
  • Cell Biology
  • General Ecology
  • Plant Biology or Animal Biology
  • General Chemistry GE or Introduction to the Sciences: Chemistry GE

You’ll also take one upper-level elective course. Our Biology minors have specialized their studies with courses in Conservation Biology, Field Techniques in Biology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology.

Unique learning opportunities in biology

Throughout your undergraduate studies, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills to set you up for success — whether it’s here on campus or in your career. As you gain a well-rounded background in biology, you’ll also benefit from hands-on opportunities through:

  • Classroom experiences: Students in our Animal Biology and Plant Biology classes take a hands-on approach as they dig into the various functions involved in the growth of life, from cells to diverse ecosystems.
  • Student activities: Take your learning beyond the classroom and lab by joining one — or several — of UCM’s more than 185 student clubs and organizations. You’ll gain added biological and leadership expertise by taking part in the UCM Fisheries Society, Para-Medico and Pre-Vet Club, Tri Beta Honorary Society and the Wildlife Society.
