Speech Communication and Theatre For BSE Minor

Building Your Skills

As a BSE in Speech Communication and Theatre student at the University of Central Missouri, you’ll have performance, design, assistant directing, and stage management opportunities from 35-40 productions each year to prepare you to become a secondary speech communication and theatre teacher. This program emphasizes the knowledge and application of communication, public speaking concepts, argumentation, debate and mass communication. The BSE is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Each summer you’ll have paid opportunities to company manage, direct, design or act in our touring children’s production. UCM Theatre and Dance invites you to join a diverse body of students, professional faculty, and participate in a rigorous curriculum that will prepare you for graduate programs or teaching at the middle school and high school levels.

Dr. Julie Rae Mollenkamp

Professor of Theatre, BSE Program Coordinator

Dr. Julie Rae Mollenkamp serves as the BSE advisor and regularly directs in the mainstage season. A veteran of more than 50 directing and acting projects, Dr. Mollenkamp enjoys working on productions that engage other academic disciplines and spark both personal and political resonances with the audience. Her research interests include theatre pedagogy and history, acting and directing, theatre for social change, feminist theatre, and performance studies. Many BSE students under Dr. Mollenkamp’s advisement have had excellent opportunities through KCACTF, the Meridith Harmon Sauer Guest Artist Series and the UCM production program.
