The UCM Advantage Program FAQs

Who is eligible for the UCM Advantage Program?
A select group of first year students who demonstrate promise but may not meet traditional admission criteria are invited to apply each year. Seating in this program is limited, and not all interested students will be admitted.

How will this program benefit me?
UCM Advantage Program students receive many advantages over traditionally admitted students including unique opportunities to get involved on campus, assistance with locating on campus employment, access to a learning specialist and support team who understand individual student needs, targeted academic coursework, tutoring and workshops, mentors and mentoring opportunities, and financial awards.

What does it mean to be “conditionally admitted”?
Conditionally admitted students serve a one-semester probationary period in which they must earn a 2.0 or higher GPA. Students who earn below a 2.0 GPA during the first semester will be suspended or dismissed from the University of Central Missouri, depending upon their previous academic standing. See the “Academic Probation” page for more information.

After the first semester, UCM Advantage Program students who earn at least a 2.0 GPA or higher, and meet all program expectations, will become fully-admitted students and may be eligible for additional financial awards or other opportunities.

What does the program cost?
There is no cost to the student to join UCM Advantage beyond standard tuition and fees. During the one-semester probationary period, UCM Advantage students may not be eligible for some scholarships. However, UCM’s Student Financial Services can provide information about other forms of assistance at http://www.ucmo.edu/sfs.

What can I expect from the program staff?
At the beginning of the semester, you will meet the learning specialist who will work with you to fill out an individualized learning plan that may include set study hours, tutoring, supplemental instruction, or other academic supports. Program staff will check in with you often, suggest or require certain campus activities, and determine how to best support students’ individual needs. Above all else, they will get to know you and help you reach your academic goals.

How do I tell UCM that I want to be part of the UCM Advantage Program?
If you received an invitation letter, just fill out the UCM Advantage Program application. Once your application has been reviewed, you’ll receive additional information concerning your admission status.

When do my obligations for the program begin?
UCM Advantage students are expected to attend the UCM Experience Kickoff events prior to the start of the semester.

Does this program replace orientation?

No, orientation is essential. It provides students with an opportunity to receive their schedules and make final plans for the fall semester. It also provides an opportunity to become familiar with the campus. Students in the UCM Advantage Program are encouraged to attend orientation in June.

Who do I contact for more information about the UCM Advantage Program?
