Dr. Michael Makara is a Professor of Political Science and serves as the chair of
the Department of Government, Law, and International Affairs at UCM. He received his
Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public
Affairs at Syracuse University, and his B.A. from Virginia Tech. Professor Makara's
research focuses on how rebel groups govern and the politicization of humanitarian
aid, with a regional focus on the Middle East. He also conducts experimental research
that explores the psychology of how individuals form their political opinions. Each
year, Dr. Makara teaches courses on international security, Middle Eastern politics,
and political psychology. Outside of the university, Dr. Makara enjoys cooking, gardening,
and cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies.
