Get Involved with the "Talking Mules"

The University of Central Missouri’s "Talking Mules" Speech & Debate Team is nationally and internationally recognized as one of the finest intercollegiate competitive forensics programs in the region and Nation. The team traces its roots back to 1884 and is one of the oldest, continuously organized intercollegiate competitive teams on campus. The Talking Mules is a comprehensive program that travels regionally, nationally and internationally to represent the University in a full slate of individual forensics events and several different formats of debate.

One of our biggest competitions, is an international exhibition debate tour of the British Isles. The two-week tour pits UCM's finest against Debate Unions representing such universities as: Cambridge, Oxford, Trinity-Dublin (Ireland), Cardiff and Glamorgan (Wales), Imperial (London), and Edinburgh, St. Andrews and Glasgow (Scotland). The "Talking Mules" first won the Montgomery Cup in 2001 and have successfully defended the Cup in several subsequent tours.

2016 Winner of the Montgomery Cup
2016 National Forensics Association’s National Finals Tournament, 4th Place President’s Division
2015 Winner of the Montgomery Cup
2015 National Forensics Association’s National Finals Tournament, 6th Place President’s Division
Numerous Individual State Championships (2015-2017) in Parliamentary Debate, Original Oratory, Prose, Poetry, After Dinner Speaking, Extemp. And Program Oral Interp.
