International students are required to demonstrate financial ability to cover tuition,
housing, and other living expenses before receiving their initial I-20 and visa. Maintaining
on-time payments is essential to remain in valid F-1 visa status.
However, we understand that unexpected financial difficulties can arise. If you are
experiencing economic hardship, there are several resources that may be available
to support you:
- Economic Hardship Scholarship
If you are experiencing financial difficulties due to recent, significant changes
in the economy or political conditions in your home country that may impact your ability
to continue your studies at UCM, you may be eligible for this scholarship.

- Student Hardship Fund
This fund supports students facing financial hardship due to personal circumstances
such as the loss of a family member, serious illness, or other unforeseen events.

- Severe Economic Hardship Work Authorization
Students who have been in F-1 status for at least one academic year may be eligible
to apply to USCIS for off-campus employment authorization (I-765) if they are experiencing new, severe economic hardship. This work authorization
is not guaranteed and must be approved by USCIS. If approved and you receive an Employment
Authorization Document (EAD) for Severe Economic Hardship, you may work up to 20 hours
per week during the academic term, including both on-campus and off-campus employment.
To begin the process, please email your ISS advisor at ISSS@ucmo.edu to request a
recommendation and a new I-20 for your application.
