Biography

Dr. Emily Ciesielski (she/her/hers) is an assistant professor in the communication disorders program and director of the W.O.R.D. Lab (Writing. Oral language. Reading. Determination.). Her research interests include reading comprehension, spelling, and written language in young children, especially those with executive function difficulties. She teaches in the undergraduate and the graduate program including Evidence-Based Practice, Language Development, Counseling, Research Design, Speech Sound Disorders, and Language Disorders. She supervises the Literacy Diagnostic Team and W.O.R.D. Camp experiences.

With over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Ciesielski specializes in language disorders including difficulties in phonology, morphology, syntax, and vocabulary. She has worked clinically in many different settings including hospitals and skilled nursing, both as a direct hire and as a traveling therapist. The majority of her clinical experience; however, has been with children in the public schools and in private practice. Dr. Ciesielski considers language (written and spoken) to be the key to success in school and in life. She is passionate about ensuring everyone has equal access to education and firmly believes that education is a right, not a privilege.

Dr. Ciesielski is a member of the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA), National Black Association for Speech-Language Hearing (NBASLH), and the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). She serves on the Board of Directors for the KS/MO IDA branch and is a graduate of the ASHA Leadership Development Program.
