Former UCM Board of Governors Member Walt Hicklin Memorial Service Planned

Members of the University of Central Missouri community are mourning the loss of Walter “Walt” Hicklin, a Warrensburg resident who touched the lives of many students and professional colleagues at UCM during a career that included teaching, mentoring, coaching and serving as an award-winning administrator. He passed away on Jan. 19.

UCM Professor of Trumpet Dr. Alan Wenger Presents Faculty Recital Sept. 26

Dr. Alan Wenger, University of Central Missouri professor of trumpet, will present a faculty recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the First United Methodist Church in Warrensburg. The program, titled “Portraits and Prose: Musical Depictions for Trumpet and Organ,” will feature works for trumpet and organ that depict events, visual art, or or literature. Dr. Wenger will be joined by guest organist Dr. Donna Hetrick and UCM Professor of Voice Dr. Jacob Sentgeorge.

Campus Faculty Invited to Attend 2023 UCM Faculty Senate Teaching and Research Conference

The University of Central Missouri Faculty Senate Teaching and Research Conference is supported by the Faculty Senate and the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The theme for this year’s conference on Monday, Sept. 18 is “Strengthening Our Practice; Empowering Our Students.” This one-day event includes 20 breakout sessions, conducted by university faculty members; a discussion event with topic-based tables; and free box lunch and coffee stations all day.

Federal VA Grant Supports Voices of the Heartland Sharing Life Stories of Underrepresented WWII, Civil War Veterans

Within a half-hour drive of the University of Central Missouri, rows of neatly-placed headstones line the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville honoring individuals who served in the United States military. With only small bits of information etched into each of the hundreds of gray granite monuments that dot this vast burial ground, the life stories of many underrepresented World War II veterans mostly remain untold. This will soon change, however, thanks to a $399,000 Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) grant that will also cover project work at Fort Scott National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kansas.

Professor Staab's New Book Examines the Originalist Jurisprudence of Hugo Black, Antonin Scalia, and Clarence Thomas and the Limits of Constraint

A new book by a University of Central Missouri professor profiles three prominent United States Supreme Court “originalists” suggesting that in actual practice this approach to legal decision making does not deliver on its promise of being free of personal philosophy and discretion. While originalists have looked to the text and original meaning of the Constitution as a clear and objective approach for jurisprudence, the author notes that these three originalist justices would likely have come to different conclusions on a variety of legal matters if they all served on the same court together.

UCM Faculty Member Participates in Lean Japan Tour in Manufacturing

Dr. Suhansa (Sue) Rodchua, a University of Central Missouri faculty member in the School of Industrial Science and Technology, in March traveled overseas to participate in the Lean Japan Tour. The purpose of her visit was to learn about lean manufacturing implementation and the Toyota Production System within some of Japan’s leading companies.

Friday the 13th is Lucky Day for UCM's New MAATA Hall of Famer

Friday the 13th may have a reputation as an unlucky day, but one University of Central Missouri faculty member can put the superstition to rest after learning on that date he will be inducted into the Mid-America Athletic Trainers’ Association (MAATA) District 5 Hall of Fame. Brian Hughes, professor and director of UCM’s Athletic Training program in the Department of Nutrition, Kinesiology and Health, will be honored during the association’s annual meeting and symposium on March 17 in Lavista, Nebraska.
