Faculty Fellows

The Honors College Faculty Fellows program aims to support both innovative teaching and scholarly activity across all disciplines at UCM. Specifically, the program looks to develop exceptional teacher-scholars by providing the support, resources, and intellectual environment needed in order for them to flourish. Research shows that faculty report a sense of gratitude after working with honors students, often indicating that they have been both energized and inspired by the experience (Miller et al., 2021).

The Honors College welcomes applications from faculty in all departments. Fellows are selected by The Honors College Advisory Board based on their proposed course’s experiential components, ability to challenge high achieving students, and interdisciplinary nature. Applicants should also demonstrate how their scholarship or creative activities informs their teaching. 

In lieu of one of their department courses, fellows teach either: 

• one 3-credit Honors College-only General Education course or 
• one 3-credit HONR 3000 course related to their area of expertise

These classes represent the highest level of engaged learning through experiential opportunities as chosen by the faculty and supported by the college. Classes can be offered in either the fall or spring semesters, but must meet primarily face-to-face.

Our fellows are active in their research or creative work, bringing this advanced level of expertise to their classes. To support their work, fellows are awarded professional development funds.

• up to $500 for Honors College-only General Education courses
• up to $1000 for HONR 3000 

While expenses must follow university guidelines, these funds can be spent in a multitude of ways including the acquisition of supplies, travel-related expenses, and/or fieldwork costs.

Faculty Fellows are also asked to:

• present their work in an Honors College event open to the community
• hold at least one office hour per week at Achauer House in the semester they are a fellow and
• attend Honors College events when available

Prospective fellows must submit an application for the upcoming academic year. Given that the fellowship requires a one-course buy out, applications must have the approval of the faculty's Department Chair and Dean. Direct all inquiries to Dr. Jennifer Carson (jcarson@ucmo.edu).
