Breadcrumb

At the University of Central Missouri, providing a secure environment is our foundational commitment. Through proactive education, real-time alerts, and visible campus presence, we work to ensure every student, employee, and visitor feels safe.
UCM takes a firm stance against assault, rape, sexual assault, and harassment. We empower our community through:
Mandatory Training: All freshmen are required to complete an online sexual violence prevention program.
Self-Defense Courses: We offer the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System, teaching practical defense tactics and techniques.
Powered by Everbridge, UCMAlerts keeps you informed about emergencies, weather, and incidents as they happen.
Delivery Methods: Text message, email, phone call, and push notifications.
Automatic Enrollment: All UCM students and employees are automatically enrolled.
Public Access: Parents and community members can sign up at ucmo.edu/ucm-alerts.
The Student Assistant Foot patrol and Escort (SAFE) Team consists of uniformed student employees who patrol the campus to deter crime and provide safe passage.

Here is a Campus Move-In Safety Checklist to help you stay secure as you settle into your new home on campus.
Secure Your Keys: Never loan your room key or UCM ID card to anyone. If you lose them, report it to University Housing immediately at (660) 543-4515.
The "Propped Door" Rule: Never prop open exterior residence hall doors or allow "tailgaters" (people you don’t know) to follow you into the building.
Lock It, Even for a Minute: Most campus thefts occur when a room is left unlocked for just a few minutes (e.g., while you're in the shower or visiting a friend down the hall).
Window Awareness: Ensure your windows are locked when you are not in the room, especially if you live on the first floor.
Inventory Your Tech: Create a list of serial numbers for your laptop, tablet, phone, and gaming consoles.
Renter's Insurance: Check if your parents' homeowners insurance covers your belongings at school, or consider a student-specific renter's insurance policy.
Engraving: Consider engraving your name or a unique identifier on high-value items.
Hide the Boxes: After moving in, don't leave boxes for expensive items (like a new 4K TV or iMac) by the dumpster. This advertises what is inside your room.
Stick to the Lit Path: UCM maintains specific "well-lit routes" for nighttime travel. Avoid shortcuts through dark alleys or wooded areas.
The Power of Two: Whenever possible, walk with a friend. If you are alone, call the SAFE Team at (660) 543-4123.
Stay Alert: Keep your headphones at a low volume and your eyes off your phone while walking so you can remain aware of your surroundings.
Know Your Exit: Locate at least two ways out of your building from your room.
Prohibited Items: Check the Housing Handbook before bringing candles, incense, or certain cooking appliances (like air fryers) that are fire hazards.
Smoke Detectors: Never cover or disable a smoke detector. If it chirps, contact maintenance immediately.
