What to Do if You are a Victim of a Crime

 

If you are a victim of a crime, it is important to report it to the proper authorities. The course of action depends on where the crime occurred.

  • On Campus: Report to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at 306 Broad St. or by calling 911 or (660) 543-4123.

  • In Warrensburg City Limits: Report to the Warrensburg Police Department at 102 S. Holden St. or by calling (660) 747-9134.

  • In Johnson County: Report to the Johnson County Sheriff's Department at 278 SW 871, Centerview, or by calling (660) 747-6469.

The DPS, Office of Student Experience and Engagement, or the Counseling Center can assist you in notifying the proper jurisdictional authorities.


 

Information About Specific Crimes

 

 

Sexual Assault

 

  • Medical Attention: Get medical attention as soon as possible by calling 911, contacting the University Health Center at (660) 543-4770, or Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) at (660) 747-2500. Medical personnel can also collect physical evidence.

  • Crisis & Support:

    • 24-hour crisis line (MOCSA): (816) 531-0233

    • Local survival hotline: (660) 429-2847

    • University Counseling Center: (660) 543-4060

  • Reporting: You can choose to contact the appropriate police agency, Student Experience & Engagement, or University Housing staff. You can pursue on-campus disciplinary procedures regardless of your decision on criminal charges.

  • Housing & Academics:

    • University Housing: Contact (660) 543-4515 for changes in living situations.

    • Academic Changes: Contact the Provost's office at (660) 543-4100 (or the main campus number for the Provost) to request academic changes.

 

Domestic Violence

 

  • Immediate Help: If injury is apparent, call 911 or contact the University Health Center or WMMC at (660) 747-2500 for medical treatment.

  • Victim Services:

    • Survival House: Contact a victim advocate at (660) 429-1088 or (660) 429-2847. They can help with transportation and shelter.

    • Counseling Center: Call (660) 543-4060 for support.

  • Witnessing Domestic Violence: If you witness domestic violence on campus, notify DPS at (660) 543-4123 or 911.

 

Assault

 

  • If injury is possible, call 911 or seek medical treatment at the University Health Center or WMMC at (660) 747-2500.

  • All on-campus assaults will be investigated by DPS. Call (660) 543-4123 to request an officer to respond.

 

Theft

 

  • Report all on-campus thefts to DPS at 306 Broad St. or by calling (660) 543-4123.

  • Prevention: The majority of thefts are "opportunity thefts." Don't leave your property unattended or doors unlocked, even for a short time.

  • Documentation: Maintain a record of descriptions and serial numbers of your property. This is crucial for entering stolen property into the national computer system, increasing the likelihood of recovery. Consider purchasing renter's insurance.

 

Harassing Phone Calls

 

  • Report to DPS at (660) 543-4123. You can request a trace be placed on your phone, but you must be willing to sign a request form and assist in the prosecution.

  • To report a crime anonymously, complete the online TIPS form.
