Computer Science, BS - Data Science Option

Data Science Bachelor’s Degree

Data scientists and analysts harness computing and technological power to help companies and corporations make smarter business decisions and solve real-world problems. UCM’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, with a focus on Data Science, helps you understand how to use tools to dissect data coming from a variety of sources. Our Data Science bachelor’s degree will introduce you to visualization, data mining, programming, statistics and forecasting to help you tackle large-scale data sets. As a Data Science major, you will learn to uncover patterns and employ statistical methods that help you provide data-driven insights to decision makers in your chosen field.

What you will study

Through the Data Science BS program at the University of Central Missouri, we help you gain the knowledge and skills needed to organize, analyze, understand and visualize data — all in an effort to make new discoveries. 

You’ll take foundational coursework in computer science, including classes such as computer programming, data structures, databases and more. Then, you’ll take specialized courses in data science such as:

  • Big Data Analytics
  • Introduction to Machine Learning
  • Neural Network and Deep Learning
  • Data Visualization
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • NoSQL Databases

In your senior year as a Data Science major, you will gain vital hands-on experience through a senior project course. Collaborating with fellow undergraduate students in our Data Science bachelor’s degree program, you will work with one of our industry partners and tackle a real-world project related to data science. Applying the knowledge and skills you’ve learned, you could choose a project related to software development, project management, data analytics or another area you’re interested in.

  • Internships: One of the best ways professionals have built their careers in data science is with an internship. Through our Data Science bachelor’s degree program, you can gain valuable experience while earning college credit. Our faculty members have many industry connections and can help find the right internship for you.
  • Study abroad: Gain a global perspective and experience different cultural values surrounding data privacy through a study abroad program. The University of Central Missouri has scholarships and grants available for undergraduate students studying abroad, including those earning degrees in Data Science. You can study computer science coursework in Germany, France or the Netherlands. 
  • Undergraduate research: Data is everywhere, with new sources of data emerging and evolving regularly. As a Data Science major at the University of Central Missouri, you will have the chance to assist on a faculty-led research project or undertake a research project of your own through independent study or a specialized, 1-on-1 class.
