Program Information - Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

Student Learning Outcomes

You will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the Master of Arts in Teaching program to:

  • Deliver essential content of the discipline through engaging, meaningful learning activities aligned to the curriculum.
  • Demonstrate understanding of curriculum implementation and instructional strategies, promoting critical thinking, consistent with current theories on student growth and development.
  • Create a positive classroom environment, conducive to learning, through correct and appropriate communication and instructional strategies.
  • Collect and maintain accurate student data to inform and improve instruction.
  • Monitor and manage student learning through self-assessment, professional collaboration, and by staying current on instructional knowledge to improve student achievement.

While salary scales vary among school districts, the average starting salary is approximately $32,000 for a nine-month contract.

Program Admission Requirements

To be accepted into the Master of Arts in Teaching program, you must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum grade point average of 2.5. 

To apply, submit the following:

  • Online Graduate Studies Application and application fee
  • Official copies of all transcripts to Graduate and International Student Services
  • Two letters of recommendation from college/university educators and/or supervisors qualified to address your potential for success as a K-12 educator and/or colleagues who are qualified to address your professional skills
  • A written essay that answers the question, "Why are you interested in a teaching career?"

Candidates seeking Missouri teacher certification must also apply to the Alternative Pathways to Certification program and submit a certification plan signed by the Director of Clinical Services and Certification.


International Admission Requirements:

Submit an application to the Office of International Admissions
Meet the above requirements and the English proficiency requirement in one of the following areas:
TOEFL score of 79 on the internet-based test or 550 on the paper-based test
IELTS exam score of 6.0
PTE academic score of 53

  • Open to U.S. and U.S. territories only
  • Choose your subject area from one of more than 20 content areas
  • Contact the Clinical Services and Certification Office to develop a certification plan tailored to your needs based on past coursework. An unofficial copy of all collegiate transcripts will be required for certification consideration.

Your certification area does not need to correspond to your undergraduate major, though many will. Some certification areas may require additional hours and/or classes not available online. Choose from the following:
