Master of Science in Education, Curriculum and Instruction

One of the longest-standing programs at the University of Central Missouri, our MSE in Curriculum and Instruction is an advanced teacher education program for educators already certified to teach. A graduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction will enhance and deepen your knowledge of curriculum development, differentiated instruction and advanced teaching strategies. As a result, you’ll be well-positioned to provide expertise and leadership working with curriculum and instruction.

In UCM’s MSE in Curriculum and Instruction program, you can choose courses that align with one of the following grade band certification areas: 

  • K–12 (Art, Music, PE, etc.)*
  • Middle School
  • Secondary Education

*Candidates with certification in elementary education should apply for the MSE in Elementary Education

What you will study

Dive deeper into curriculum and instruction to better understand how to manage, adapt and monitor student learning. In UCM’s Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction degree program, you’ll learn how to more effectively engage students and become an active part of your school’s learning community. 

Regardless of whether your certification areas are in K–12, Middle School or Secondary Education, you’ll take core courses such as Curriculum Development and Assessment, Contemporary Instruction: Theory and Practice, and Introduction to Research.

You will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the Master of Science in Education in Curriculum and Instruction program to:

Admission Requirements

To be accepted into the Master of Science in Education in Curriculum and Instruction program, you must:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited or National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education institution with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5
  • Submit an application for admission (including submission of official transcripts)
  • Select an area of concentration: Secondary Education, Middle Level Education, or K-12 Education
  • Submit proof of teacher certification or provide a professional endorsement from any of the 50 states or territories
  • Submit a copy of a recent summative teaching evaluation (i.e., a PBTE or similar evaluation form), or a letter from a school superintendent, principal, or professor attesting to teaching abilities and graduate school potential
