Costs and Aid
The cost of study abroad can vary widely depending on location and duration. Students should note that because they are still enrolled as full-time students at UCM, FAFSA may apply for semester and academic year study abroad programs. Additionally, most scholarships can be used for your study abroad experience as well. To view detailed costs of each specific program, please visit our program search site.
Many affordable options are available. For some programs, the cost of studying abroad for a semester or academic year is actually less expensive than a semester or academic year at UCM.
There are generally three main factors that influence the cost of a study abroad experience:
Generally, the more services and opportunities provided by the program or provider, the higher the cost of a program. For example, if a program includes the cost of housing, insurance, and excursions, then the program will generally be more expensive than a program that does not include the same amenities. All study abroad students should expect to budget for the following things for all programs:
- Tuition
- Housing
- Insurance
- Airfare
- Passport/Visa needs
- Meals
- Travel money
In most cases, shorter programs are lower in cost. As the program length increases, the cost of the program will generally increase as well.
Current exchange rates and large, high-cost cities have a big impact on the cost of studying abroad. In general, larger cities are more expensive. Countries where the local currency is much stronger than the U.S. dollar are also more expensive.
Study Abroad Grants
UCM students may be eligible to receive financial support through the Study Abroad
office to fund an approved study abroad program in the form of two available grants:

- Available to any UCM student on a program approved by the Study Abroad Office
- Academic Year 2019-2020 amounts: $1500 for first Fall or Spring exchange program; $1000 for other Fall or Spring programs; $500 for summer programs; $350 for all faculty-led programs.
- No application necessary
- Students must be registered for a course affiliated with a Study Abroad tour to receive the grant
Honors College Study Abroad Travel Grant
- Up to $1,000 travel reimbursement after completion of program
- Available only to members of the Honors College
- Intended to help offset the cost of transportation to and from the host country
- Travel grant can only be used once
- Students should check with their academic departments for other grant opportunities
Scholarships
UCM students have many avenues for study abroad scholarships. When applying for scholarships students should understand the scholarship requirements.

UCM Alumni Foundation Scholarships
- Funded by friends, family and alumni of UCM
- Vary in criteria

External Scholarships
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
- Available only to Federal Pell Grant Recipients
- Award amounts vary depending of length of study and student need
- Emphasis is placed on non-traditional study and intern abroad destinations outside of Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand

Boren Awards for International Study
- Provides funding for undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world critical to U.S. interests
- Students studying languages in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East are encouraged to apply

Bridging Scholarship
- Offers scholarships to American undergraduates to study in Japan
- Available only to U.S. citizens
- Summer study programs are not eligible

BUTEX Scholarship
- For study abroad students studying in the UK
- Students must be placed at an eligible UK institution for a minimum of one semester

DAAD German Academic Exchange
- Supporting several types of study and research in Germany
- Interested students should visit the DAAD website for more information
- Provides funding for several types of study, research, and teaching abroad for postgraduate students

Phi Kappa Phi
- Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher are eligible to apply
- Only available for accredited study abroad programs

Annette Kade Scholarship
- For ISEP students studying German and French in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and French Antilles
- Applications are do in October for 2019 Spring or Full Semesters. Deadline for Fall 2019 will be announced in December.

Sabe (San Andrés Building Excellence) Scholarship
- Study Abroad at the Universidad de San Andres in Buenos Ares, Argentina in Latin American studies
- Partial and complete tuition ($8000) will be awarded based on need and merit.

Financial Aid
Students may be eligible to receive financial aid on approved UCM study abroad programs. Students must be aware of the following criteria for financial aid while abroad:
- Students must maintain full-time enrollment while abroad
- Failure to maintain full-time enrollment may jeopardize continued eligibility to receive financial aid
- Full-time enrollment is defined as the equivalent to at least 12 UCM credits for fall and spring semesters
Students receiving financial or who are interested in receiving financial aid for study abroad should follow these steps:
- Download the current version of Request to Receive Financial Aid for International Study form the UCM Financial Aid Forms webpage.
- Make an appointment with your study abroad advisor to discuss the costs associated with your study abroad program.
- Have your Request to Receive Financial Aid for International Study form signed by the study abroad coordinator.
- Make an appointment with Student Financial Servicesto discuss your study abroad financial aid needs.
