Thinking About Studying Abroad - You've Come to the Right Place!
At UCM, students have a wide variety of study abroad options. This allows our students to find experiences abroad that suit their individual needs and goals. This also makes for a lot of decisions, and we are here to help!
Below is a general roadmap to help guide you in your decision-making and to help you find out about the options that best suit you! We hope this is a helpful resource, but be sure to stop by the Study Abroad office for an information session or advising soon!
Note: Each student who studies abroad will receive an International Study Grant of up to $1500 to make these opportunities more accessible.

- Financial Aid Office - Learn the types of aid you have and see how each might help pay for your program.
- Faculty Advisor - Some students will need to work closely with their faculty advisor for major and minor requirements.
Steps to Take
- Search the program database for location, term, or keyword. This is required for any student interested in going abroad. Relax, though! This is not an application for a program abroad yet! This system will help you stay on track from beginning to end!
- Apply to 1-3 programs that meet your interests/needs. If you don’t feel comfortable applying, you can also favorite interesting programs. Our staff is here to assist you with your application.
- If you are applying for a faculty-led program specifically, be sure to set up a meeting with the Faculty leader. Available programs can be searched “Faculty Led”, or by filtering the results in the program search. You will need to submit an application through the Study Abroad Portal, as well as obtain approval from your faculty, to join the program.
- Semester and Summer abroad programs will always require an additional application process with the partner abroad. Please meet your Study Abroad Advisor to be sure you know the process.
- Make sure to complete all the "Pre-Decision" steps in your application.
Steps To Take
- Before you do anything else, APPLY for a passport if you don’t have one.
- Complete the required content in your application.
- Make a Study Abroad advising appointment.
- Complete substitution forms for all courses you will be taking abroad. This way, you’ll have certainty about what classes you’re enrolling in abroad.
- Make copies of your passport - Passports are one of the most lost or misplaced items in all of travel. Keep a copy in your carry-on and your suitcase to use in case you are separated from your passport.
- If required, prepare documents for visa applications. Your Study Abroad Advisor will
help you determine these as soon as possible in the process.
Apply for a visa (if required) 90 days before your program starts. You can not apply until that time. - Wait to purchase airfare until you have received the official acceptance letter from abroad. It could be paper or digital.
- Attend the REQUIRED Study Abroad Workshops. Visit ucmo.edu/studyabroad for the most up-to-date information.
