Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Central Missouri. As you explore the information about our department’s programs and curriculum and the home pages of some of our faculty and student organizations, you will discover a strong, diverse, and student-oriented department.
Areas of Study
In our department students may choose to major in Actuarial Science and Statistics, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Mathematics, and Mathematics Education. Graduate students may pursue Master of Science degree programs in Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Mathematics. Elementary Education and Middle School-Junior High School majors may elect to minor in mathematics to earn certification to teach mathematics in grades 5 – 9. As of Fall 2015, there are approximately 2,300 students majoring in different academic programs offered by the department.
Highly Qualified Faculty
By far the greatest strength of the department is its faculty. More than 80 percent of the department’s faculty have earned doctorates. Classes are taught by talented, experienced, dedicated, and caring faculty who believe in individualized attention for their students. The active research interests of many of our faculty contribute to the strength of the department’s M.S. programs.
The department faculty are committed to conduct both basic and applied research. Each year, faculty members publish their research results on various professional journals and give talks at various professional conferences.
Because of the diversity of interests among our department majors and minors, the department sponsors five student organizations which meet regularly to discuss topics ranging from career opportunities to new discoveries in the mathematical sciences. These include Kappa Mu Epsilon (a mathematics honor society), Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), a student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, The Actuarial Organization, a student chapter of the Mathematical Association of America, and Central Missouri Math Educators.
A growing number of endowed scholarships are awarded each year to department majors and minors. More information about these scholarships and application forms can be obtained by contacting me at the address below.
