Missouri Safety Center Receives Subaward to Help Develop Virtual De-Escalation Training Through Active Learning for Police Organizations

The University of Central Missouri has been included as a subaward recipient of the De-Escalation Training through Active Learning (DeTAL) Assessment and Research Center through Western Illinois University’s (WIU) Psychology Department. The cooperative agreement is through the United States Department of Justice COPS Office for the development of this cutting-edge virtual training center. The subaward of approximately $288,000 will be administered by the Missouri Safety Center at UCM.

An estimated 35,000 to 40,000 individuals who pass by a tall digital advertising sign north of the Highway 50 and Highway 13 intersection each day are getting an important safety reminder while the business owner who made it possible is getting recognition.

Sedalia Police Department Donates Former Patrol Car to Missouri Safety Center

A collaboration that will enhance learning experiences for individuals seeking law enforcement careers, the Sedalia Police Department has donated a used patrol car to the Missouri Safety Center at the University of Central Missouri. The formal presentation event took place the same week a group of 27 Central Missouri Police Academy (CMPA) cadets began a training program that will allow them to utilize the car at the Safety Center’s Highway Safety Instructional Park, south of UCM’s main campus in Warrensburg.

Missouri Safety Center Collaborates with Agencies on 'Take 1 for Zero' Initiative

The Missouri Safety Center at the University of Central Missouri is teaming up with the Missouri School Boards’ Association and several other collaborating agencies for the “Take 1 for Zero” project, funded through the Missouri Department of Transportation Highway Safety and Traffic Division. The goal of the project is to make “1” major impact on roadway safety by focusing on school bus stop arm violations throughout Missouri.

Missouri Safety Center Partners with National Program, KCPD to Offer No-cost Officer Safety Training at Regional Academy in July, August

The Missouri Safety Center at the University of Central Missouri is pleased to announce its partnership with the National Law Enforcement Roadway Safety Program (NLERSP) and the Kansas City Police Department to provide no-cost officer safety training to law enforcement professionals at the Kansas City Police Department Regional Police Academy during the months of July and August, 2022. The NLERSP training will provide law enforcement executives, supervisors, trainers, and patrol officers with evidence-based strategies and tactics to improve officer safety during traffic stops, emergency response driving, all-weather driving, and roadway operations.

Central Missouri Police Academy Celebrates 50 Year Anniversary with 100% Employment of Graduating Class

While fulfilling a vital need for well-prepared police officers who are now serving several area communities, the Central Missouri Police Academy (CMPA) at the University of Central Missouri celebrated a milestone when it graduated its 161st cadet class on June 19. All 25 members of the graduating class had have found employment, making this the first time that 100 percent of the cadets were hired at the time of graduation.

Grant Helps Missouri Safety Center Explore New Measures to Counter Increase in Impaired Drivers

While the number of impaired drivers is escalating, the Missouri Safety Center at the University of Central Missouri has a new opportunity to help address this national and state issue. It is receiving grant funding that paves the way for research into new tools to help keep high-risk drivers from getting behind the wheel.
